Castor Oil for Voles - can I put on my plants?

Post  jillschmill on 5/16/2013, 10:43 am

Hi all!

I am having a WAR with voles! For three years they have not touched my strawberry plants and now they are having a feast, the little buggers. My neighbors must think I'm nuts outside swearing every morning when I find new holes.

I sprayed a castor oil solution around the outside of the box (the grass around it), but it did nothing. My strawberries haven't yet shown their faces, just the flowers. Do you think it is safe for me to spray the castor oil and soap mixture directly on the plants? Or have I already lost the battle and have to just wait until the end of the season?

Thanks for advice!

Thanks, Lindacol!

I have a feeling that I'll be digging everything up to put weed cloth underneath at the end of the year, but didn't want to do it just a couple weeks before strawberries show up!!

However, I just called the manufacturer of the castor oil spray and they told me I could spray it on the food plants, but should stay low and try to avoid the actual berries if possible. However, if it gets on food, just was well they said.

I am bound and determined to win this one.
