neem and frogs

Post  jazzycat on 5/26/2013, 3:22 pm

Today when I was in the garden I noticed some leaf miners, and also a few spots on some of my tomato plants. I would like to use some neem oil, but we also have a lively community of tree frogs, and they love going in the plants at night to sing. I really don't want to hurt the frogs. I've tried to find information on whether it's safe to use, but all I could find is not to use it in water. I just want to spray the plants. I did find one site that was dedicated to saving frogs that talked about pesticide use, and someone there said as an alternative to pesticides to rub neem on the leaves, but this wasn't someone from the site, but someone commenting on the site, so I'm not sure how much to trust the information. I put in a call to them, but I'm not sure they'll call me back. I was thinking of using it early in the morning because the frogs like to go in the plants in the evenings. At least that way it will be completely dry, so less likely to absorb through their skin. Does anyone have any information about this? I have been hesitant to do anything proactive because of my desire not to hurt anything beneficial, but I kinda think I need to now. Thanks bunches!

The previous post were found through a search of the forum and the database in the Pests forum regarding the pesticide Neem and amphibians.

Neem is toxic to amphibians, see subheading of ecotoxicity of the second link.
If there is a minimal amount of leaves affected, hand picking would be the safest course of action regarding the health of the frogs and toads living in your garden.
