How Many Peppers & Eggplants Per Sq.Ft.?

Post  metweezer on 5/27/2013, 7:41 pm

Mel's book is around here somewhere but it is in an unpacked box. I know that tomatoes and cucumbers are planted one per sq.ft. but how about peppers and eggplants? Can I possibly get them 2 per sq.ft?
Thanks, Steve

One pepper plant to a square. One eggplant to a square. They do fine one foot apart. The tomatoes I have found do best one per square, every other square.
However I have had good luck planting cherry type tomatoes one per square one foot apart in a row, that way I can Florida weave trellis them.

I plant my cukes 6-9 per square, and have had good results with that spacing.

do an experiment and try (2) pepper plants per square in one area and compare the results/ yield to (1) per square. I did one per square last year and found that each pepper plant had a massive root system that grew under adjacent squares...(2) may be agressive, but worth a try.

What does that look like? How do they get to the trellis if they are at the farthest away part of the square without climbing over the others?

Hey, I am finally home so I can post photos. Here is a pic of last year spacemaster cukes. Basically I trellis them the same way I do the peas.
There they are, on the right in this photo. Look at all those blooms down under. I do prune out the lowest leaves to allow for greater airflow when I plant this thickly. Also note that everything else in this bed, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are each planted one per square, there are plants in each square of this bed.

In this photo from several weeks earlier, you can see the cuke trellis netting at the back of the bed.

Thanks Rooster! I cheated with those by planting starts from the store.
I need to get some for this year. I swear by the lobstah and homemade compost blend!

By the way, Metweezer, if you've never seen an eggplant PLANT, be prepared! I had no idea what I was in for when I planted some for the first time two years ago. They ended up huge -- 5 - 6 feet tall, and pretty wide. I had to stake them and trim off some of the leaves so I didn't have an impenetrable jungle! Shocked

Thanks to all of you for your replies and assistance. I grew eggplant before but not in a SFQ. I had about 3 eggplant vegetables in a less than 3' plant. My pepper plants also didn't get that big. Oh well, I only have one 4X4 square so I will not be able transplant all of my plants that I grew from seed.

Thanks, Steve

Steve , if you prune your peppers and eggppants to a " Y " shape you might need slightly more than a square foot for each plant if you're looking for decent sized ones .
I used tubs for mine last year and everyone was way bigger than a square foot .
