Mid-At: Jun 2013 - Is it hot in here or what?

Post  sfg4uKim on 6/1/2013, 11:23 pm

Dear Mid-Atlanticers . . .

How has your weather been lately? It was unseasonably cool here just south of Baltimore . . . well until it was unseasonably hot.

So have y'all experienced the cicadas yet? I've heard that with this rise and fall of the temperatures - the dreaded cicada infestation has been delayed in some areas.

I haven't seen nor heard them here yet, but just about 50 miles south my husband had one smash against his windshield down in Virginia.

Yes, it was very hot here most of last week and this weekend - up to low 90's. Tonight some storms came through a cooled the temperature but there is high humidity. \
I have not seen a cicadas as of yet. My son in DC stated he saw some last week. ugh...

Re: Mid-At: Jun 2013 - Is it hot in here or what?

Post  sfg4uKim on 6/5/2013, 5:34 am

I started this month's theme as "is it hot in her or what?" Well today I'm freezing my tushie off since I left the windows open last night.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it and I have a lot to do in the garden today, and it's always easier to work in the cooler weather, but WOW has this season's weather been a roller coaster or what?

Has anyone else had "leggy" plants from this crazy weather?

My broccoli raab got tall and went straight to flower - very little veggie, but the leaves are yummy. My radishes didn't "bulb" but grew spindly and flowered as soon as it turned hot. My bok choi did . . . NOTHING!

On a brighter note, my lettuce is kicking butt, and while it looked like a REALLY slow start for my tomatoes, they seem to be perking up and finally starting to grow.

I installed 8 beds for my neighbor tucked away in a nice microclimate and her stuff is WAY ahead of mine. LOL I've asked her if I can teach my next SFG class at HER house because her garden looks TONS better than mine. Embarassed

It has been quite the roller coaster but this time last year we were around 100 degrees, so having a normal spring/summer transition is just fine with me. I haven't seen/heard any CICADAS in our area. My poor strawberries could use a serious break from the rain but I understand we are to get another boat load on Thursday.

The weather here is crazy, hot, cool, now this crazy dereche (sp?)... looked out the window one minute, and it was gray, now it's dark as night.  Hoping my little palnts make it through, calling for hail and severe rain / wind.  I was so excited to see my radishes pop up yesterday...

It has been raining so much here that I am unable to get to my garden!
Hopefully tom I will be able to tackle my three sisters garden to see what's going on along with my 4x4's.
It will nice to see the sun tom.....sunny
