Self watering

Post  Deepforks on 6/6/2013, 1:30 am

hello all. so, as an absolute first time gardner, i've just realized i may have an issue with watering for a period in august while i'll be away. i've got a handful of plants in those large black pots. i've seen the standard self watering methods, but i recently saw a different way and was wondering if anyone has tried it and if so, how it worked. it involved filling up a 5 gallon bucket and placing it next to your pot. take a strip of old towel and weight it to the bottom of the bucket. next, bury the other end a few inches down in your soil. any thoughts?

Depending on your weather, and your time away, it may not be sufficient.

Can you depend on someone to just garden-sit?

Otherwise, a timered drip irrigation system would probably work best. I got mine at dripworks.com, but there all kinds of vendors, and even big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes will have them.
