GDD list for when pests emerge

Post  GloriaG on 6/11/2013, 2:41 pm

Does anyone know of a list that shows the GDD (growing degree days) associated with the emergence of specific insect pests.

For instance, I found out that SVB emerge at 1000 GDD, therefore to be safe, you need to start your spraying program at 950 GDD. (For me that's May 7th.) Likewise Flea Beetles emerge between 800-1200 GDD, but are naturally on the decline at 1600-1800 GDD.

I would like to be able to find a list so I could be proactive and mark my calendar when to be ready for certain insect pests.

Thanks,
Gloria

Now you're thinking like a farmer!

I can tell you that the list of GDDs for veggies must be locked up in a safe somewhere! It's been elusive for a number of us on the forum.

I haven't looked specifically for insect GDDs, but the numbers are important for commercial pest control so they've got to be out there somewhere. Have you tried your local extension service?

I googled and found this: "The Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University is one of the top entomology departments in the United States." Is there a way to contact them for info?

Please be sure to let us know if you find something.

GDD list for when pests emerge

Post  GloriaG on 6/11/2013, 4:50 pm

Hi Boffer,

Yes - I've been trying to find the emergence GDD for insect pests for quite a while. But, like you, I can't find anything consolidated. Periodically I find a little information stuck in with another topic but it's really hit-or-miss. And, I'm not sure if it's "regional" or not. For instance some veggies have regional differences, so I suspect that some insect pests might as well.

I'll see if I can find out anything from A&M. Perhaps they have a link or can provide info.
Thanks,
Gloria

Not what you're looking for, but nice to know?

Here's a list of pest insects for ornamental plants, from the Univ of N.H.

GDD list for when pests emerge

Post  GloriaG on 6/11/2013, 5:39 pm

Thanks,

I'm going to contact the Department of Entomology at A&M and see what they can provide.

I've seen the lists for ornamental pests, but nothing for vegetable pests - which seems like it odd.

I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks

GDD list for when pests emerge

Post  GloriaG on 6/26/2013, 3:07 pm

In case anyone is interested, I had a response from A&M Department of Entomology!  They offered links to some sites listing GDD's for insect emergence on ornamental plants, but couldn't offer anything related to vegetable gardening insects.

However, they did note that the information could be useful and that it would made a good university study.

GDD list for when pests emerge

Post  GloriaG on 6/26/2013, 4:47 pm

Hi camprn,

Well, I have been making a note of the first day I found each insect - but I wouldn't swear that it was the first day they emerged.  Finding the GDD that corresponds to that day is easy from The Weather Channel's "farmers weather" site.

Perhaps we could make it a joint effort and start a topic where everyone could post the GDD on the days they first found an insect.  Would make a great reference spreadsheet!

State -- town -- insect name -- date -- GDD

What do you think?

What a wonderful idea! Even if the season is well under way for most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern half of the planet can weigh in as their season starts. There must be similarities. And us Northern folks can still start now & at least track the decline as well as the start.

I would love to , but I know I will not be able to do it correctly. I have not been in the garden this year as I should have been. I may explore this idea again next season.
