Wednesday's Derecho

Post  llama momma on 6/11/2013, 7:21 pm

Here we go again central Ohio and Indiana, another derecho, a nasty straight line windstorm on the way. Great-- I have lots of young transplants that aren't going to appreciate this at all. Anyone making preparations to protect plants from the Wed. afternoon mess that's expected? Can't forget the power outages and damage from last year's lousy derecho, never heard of this type of storm before.

Good luck with all of your hard work ahead of you and I hope your plants don't suffer from the storms!

Thanks. Timing of it has change, now suppose to arrive tonight.  I won't see what's happening outside..
Last year we had one of these types of storms come through.  The wind here was around 70mph but large areas just east of here was even worse and lost electric for a couple of weeks from so much damage. The weather channel featured a story about derechos.  The wind can be = to an ef1 tornado over a couple hundred miles but with straight line type winds. That's why there is so much damage from these things.  Weird name and a weird kind of storm. It has really large freaky looking shelf type clouds that arrive first.  Keeping my fingers crossed for some good luck tonight maybe tomorrow will be a nice surprise afterall...

I am planning on tying up my toms and peppers to give them more stability.  Hopefully won't be as bad as last year's storm; although I was fortunate and did not lose power many coworkers did.

I'd love to see some pictures of those "freaky shelf-like clouds," Gina.

I Googled derecho 2012 and looked at the photos.  I wish all of you in the pathway the best of luck.

Donna, I'm having trouble pulling derecho pictures off of google for you to see.
If you want, go to google, then images, and type in derecho. The pictures are very good but it certainly can't beat the OMG factor when that stuff is right in your backyard.
 hiding
Appreciate that.
Thanks sanderson

Herblover,

Last year the trellised plants were bigger when the storm hit and were ok. But with this storms timing my transplants are still little and to me look too fragile for anything over 15mph....arrgh.

Also, I'd love to tarp over the critter cages but with this kind of wind forget it.  Last year with no tarps the wind didn't just blow through the chicken wire, it lifted the critter cages right off.

Yes all is good and thank you Tricia, I appreciate your kind thoughts.
News station reported over 14 thousand lightening strikes, trees knocked over,  a few miles from here a Home Depot had part of its roof torn off, some homes damaged etc,.  Overall far less damage than last year's derecho.  All my baby tomato plants made it when I was convinced they were goners.   At dawn I grabbed the binoculars to see the damages from inside the house and could tell all the maters were still there, even the tall slender asparagus plants were fine too. Didn't lose a single thing,  Whew.

Llama Momma,

I was also worried, especially after I took your suggestion and Googled photos of last year's Derecho.  If I saw clouds like that around here, my cats and I would be scrambling for the crawl space beneath the house!

I agree donnainzone10,  I had the cat carrier nearby in case we all had to head for the basement.

Herblover, you are north of me where it hit harder, everything ok??  That Delaware county tornado must have been a little too close to your place I think.  They confirmed 9 tornadoes in Ohio from that storm.

I am fine, no damage. However, the farmers I have my chicken/turkey/egg CSA with up in Marion county got hit hard. The Delaware county tornado was in the northern part of the county and I am in the south near the Franklin county line.

Great News it was north of you. Unfortunate for the folks up in the northwest part of the state. Hope the rest of the season behaves itself.
