Screening for bottom of boxes????

Post  milaneyjane on 4/23/2010, 8:24 pm

I am setting up my beds this weekend. I bought the 4x8x8 inch composite ones from SamsClub. Anyway, my beds are going on the soil where I normally do my row gardening. I know we have a vole/mole issue so I definately need to attach screening on the bottom. I looked at 1/4 inch hardware fabric---OUCH!!! Super expensive. So I opted for aluminum window screening instead for a 1/4 of the price. Is that ok? Also, do I need to put cardboard in the bottom if I have the screen on the boxes and it is on dirt? I don't know how weeds could possibly fit through window screens and don't want to monkey with cardboard too if it isn't necessary.

Thanks!!! Can't wait to post some pictures.

I hope that works out for you. I opted for the more expensive hardware cloth because I didn't want to take the boxes apart in a few years if I was wrong. One neighbor had an issue with the moles breaking through chicken wire (which is another option used). However, we all do the best we can with the setting up the boxes as the initial cost is something isn't it!

Be sure to post some pictures of your finished boxes to inspire the rest of us.

Good luck!
