Did I make a mistake in where I planted my sweet peas????

Post  lalawson on 6/19/2013, 5:06 pm

I planted 4 peas per square.  They are growing really well.  I also put a trellis up near them and I'm not sure what is suppose to be trellising up it.  Do I try and get all 4 plants going up it?  They all seem really bushy and tangled now and I'm thinking I should have only planted 2 seeds along the back row.  We did harvest some the other night and they were delicious. Very Happy

I think you can actually plant more than four, so you should be good. I just kind of push them towards the trellis, and let them figure it out! Peas do get "tangly" for sure. Ours just sort of crept up the trellis, if I saw some heading the wrong direction I'd try and set it the right way, but it was hard not to break the stem. Congrats. they look way better than mine did! haha

I often help my pea plants find their way to the trellis in my SFG.

Are you certain that you haven't planted a Knee High or Dwarf variety? These are bush type and will not trellis well at all. They were developed to accommodate those that don't want 5-10' sprawling plants that need trellising.

I don't think these are dwarf. I can't really get the information off the packet of seeds I planted. They are Burpeeana Early (Organic) and I have to say that I didn't have one bit of issues with insects or anything with these plants. Searching on the internet it says they grow on a vine so I think they will go up the trellis once they get taller. They are the prettiest thing in my garden. Nice to know I can just push them where they need to go. Thanks!

I found the Burpee website and it describes the plant as "Height: 24 inches, Spread: 8 inches", so that's why the peas are on the "down-low".

I grew Burpeena Early Peas this spring.  Planted 2/24 harvested first batch 5/25.  They grew between 2 to 3 feet tall.  I put a small 2 foot fence down the middle of each square to keep them uprignt.
