Hello Square Footers!

Post  lookin4shade on 6/21/2013, 12:45 pm

Hello all,
Have been gardening (off and on) all my life... but back to the sunny south here and it becomes a different challenge.
Love SFG-not only so much simpler but oh my aching back REALLY loves it -  much less aching Very Happy

Have been worm composting for the last several years - teaching classes at local schools - sharing my worms and compost with school gardens.
Looking forward to sharing with you all as I get my hands into SFG again... looks like a great bunch!

Hello Square Footers!

Post  grownsunshine on 6/21/2013, 2:32 pm

Hi lookin4shade!

I was in your part of the US a month ago (Apr/May). Wife & I went to South Beach, Keys, short cruise for our 25th. Really enjoyed the trip! Florida is nice...great food! Got caught in one of your short rain storms...whew! Poured a whole Los Angeles years worth of rain in 30 minutes.

I was thinking of making a worm compost bin. I even purchase a couple of plastic buckets. My biggest concern is the heat in So. Cal. I know worms don't appreciate heat and the weather can get a bit toasty around here...and there is NO WAY my wife is going to let me keep a bin in the house. I have a big tree in my back yard and can keep it in the shade, but I wasn't sure if that is enough. I don't live close to the ocean, so my area gets about 7-10 degrees hotter than the coast (105 max a couple of days/year).

Any suggestions?

Nice to meet you! I am also a Floridian but I am just starting to dip my toes into gardening.

I'm in Spring Hill...patiently waiting for the weather to cool down so I can get this vision into something concrete. I have a few tomato plants going in pots that were gifts...and now I'm about to start some okra seeds because I'm too impatient to wait until the Fall and okra seems like the only thing I can start right now.

It seems like Florida is a different animal when it comes to gardening...I'm sure it will take many years of trials and tribulations before I can really learn the different nuances of gardening that make gardening different in our climate.

Cheers,

Brian
