Soybean Rust! (Geeky Fungicide Question)

Post  WriterCPA on 6/22/2013, 11:13 pm

This invasive species, new to the Americas in 2004, is hosted by legumes and kudzu, travels long distances by wind, and has moved into my garden for a second year!  Also, Maryland did not have a good hard freeze this winter to kill off last year's spores.

The rust starts at the bottom of the plant and moves up.  At first it is hardly noticeable and may look like dirt splattered on the leaves from rain.

DISEASE: Soybean Rust

PATHOGEN: Phakopsora pachyrhizi and P. meibomiae

HOSTS: Soybean and kudzu are the most important hosts, but there are over 90 other hosts known for P. pachyrhizi. (Mostly legumes, but as anyone south of Mason-Dixon Line (an hour north of my home) knows, the South abounds in soybeans and KUDZU! -- talk about an invasive species!)

It seems that the following are the recommended fungicides.  I cannot find them by these names for the home gardener -- does anyone know if they are available?

Trade names, examples    Active Ingredient   Manufacturer/Marketer

Abound™ 2.08F, Amistar™,
Heritage™, Quadris™         azoxystrobin             Syngenta

Reason™ 500SC                 fenamidone              Bayer

Disarm™ 480SC,
Evito™ 480SC                    fluoxastrobin             Arysta

Sovran™ 50WG                  kresoxim methyl         Cheminova

Cabrio™ 20EG,
Headline™ 2.08EC,
\Insignia™ 20WG,               pyraclostrobin             BASF

Compass™ 50WG,
Flint™ 50WG,
Gem™ 500SC                     trifloxystrobin               Bayer

Table 1. QoI fungicides commercially available or expected to be available soon in the U.S. (Updated 2012)

Maybe this will help.

I tried to find more information about the disease, but it seems that it's still an ongoing research thing. Usually if you don't grown any host plants for X number of years, the spores will die. Not being able to find that information is annoying at best since I dislike using biocides.
