Buckwheat to boost your soil?

Post  Windmere on 7/17/2013, 12:22 pm

Hello all,

I recently read a blurb from Organic Gardening that recommended planting buckwheat just before planting fall crops.  The goal is to give the soil a compost boost with nutrients such as phosphorus and calcium.  It mentioned turning them over after they flower.  Here is a link to what I read:

http://www.organicgardening.com/learn-and-grow/buckwheat-summer-soil-boost/?cm_mmc=OGNews-_-1360650-_-07172013-_-Buckwheat_A_Summer_Soil_Boost_title

I'd like to know:  Has anyone tried this?  It would be something to think about in preparation for fall crops, garlic, etc.

Thanks for your comments~

Cover crops are not recommended or necessary in the SFG. All you need is quality homemade compost to put back in the beds.

Hi Camprn,

That was just the sort of answer I was looking for.  I read all of the posts in the link you cited.  I love it:  Keep it simple!

Thanks for such a rapid response Camprn.  I appreciate it!

Wind

thanks

I'm not sure if I enjoy making compost as much as gardening...
Both are wonderful tasks, I had to use the local re-cycle centers compost this year, added a few items and has worked well for me.
Now I am using my own compost, a quarter bed 4X4 is ready and being used
A 4x4 bed is full and working for next spring
A new 4x4 bed is started
