Burlap and seedlings, it works well

Post  llama momma on 7/18/2013, 4:54 pm

When we are direct seeding into the garden in super hot temperatures here is a tip.
I recently placed a piece of burlap over some late planted corn and it not only came up in 3 days of 90 degree heat but the moisture held so nicely from the burlap even with sunshine 12+ hours a day.

Mels mix was still moist the following day, and those stinky thieving birds haven't a clue what's under there. Then I propped up the burlap a few inches above the seedlings when they popped up. Maybe this will help someone.

Oh, and according to a master gardening page it says corn can be planted in central Ohio up to July 15th.  I didn't know this.

A wet newspaper works but have to remove before  sprouting  and put in the compost heap .
