Sanjay,  Welcome from Central California.  glad you\'re here

Did you purchase the All New Square Foot Gardening book?  I am a March 2013 Newbie and I have learned so much about gardening in general, and SFG in particular.  So many helpful and experienced gardeners on this Forum.

Again, welcome.

glad you\'re here
Where in South Africa are you?

It will be so interesting to learn how you deal with growing in South Africa. How far south of the equator are you and are you starting your summer season or are you close enough to have year round gardening? Do you have a good source of compost and a place to start your own composting operation? Compost is the base of the SFG system in a lot of Non Western countries. I hope you have a camera and can post pictures to the forum. We love to see pictures of gardens and often a picture will help in solving a problem.

Kay

Since you are so far south, what is your growing season like?  We will be able to help answer your questions if you can explain what the weather is like when you post a question.  The frost dates? Remind us that you are in a different season from us.

Welcome Sanjay!

I'm having a ball here on this forum, learning so much, talking to nice and helpful people, and seeing inspiring photographs and do-it-yourself project ideas. It's a wonderful place to learn! Hope you have as much fun as I do here, and take the time to go back through the older pages to dig up interesting topics. Gardening is gardening, soil is soil, and plants are plants, so a two or three year old topic may be just as interesting and valuable as anything you'll find on the front page.

Someone asked if you've read the new SFG book, as opposed to the old one, I guess. I'd just like to say that I find the old one is a really great book. I'll read the new one next, of course. But if all anyone has handy, or can afford, is an old version of the SFG book, I'd like to volunteer that it's really a good read, even if Mel did change some of his ideas over time. Together with this forum, either or both books will teach you an awful lot that you can put to productive use very quickly. Especially since Mel steers you toward intensive gardening that doesn't let your garden sleep during fall or winter, advocating instead that you simply change crops as the seasons change.

From a fellow forum newbie, good luck!

Welcome Sanjay!  We look forward to hearing about your growing climate.  From what I could find online, your latitude is about as far south of the equator as the USA's gulf coast is north of the equator, but I know there are mountainous areas that give a much cooler climate than at sea level.  Give us details - we love to know about all kinds of growing areas around the world!

GG, in South Dakota, USA - moderately hot summer, COOOOOOOLD winter!

Sanjay,  I was looking at a world map and it looks like your country is considered a Southern Hemisphere "Mediterranean" climate.  My area in California is considered Mediterranean.  You should be able to grow almost anything your heart desires!  Very Happy

Yes you can, if you are willing to cup your hands and run behind an elephant.Just remember,if the elephant turns around and faces you,you are going to have a bad day.
