Hello from Philadelphia Pa.
By way of a short introduction I am a retired nurse, married, 55 yo and and looking forward to my first SFG this year. My husband and I built raised beds in our back yard several years ago for the purpose of planting shade loving ornamentals in our back yard since we did not have enough sun to grow decent grass back there. Then we caught a break. The house behind us was sold and the new owners cleared out the over grown plantings and took out some trees so that they could install a deck. Joy, oh joy we now have sun and I was able to fulfill my life long wish of having a vegetable garden.
I remember watching the original Square Foot gardening show on PBS and I had always wanted to do this. Well this year is the year. We had the boxes and I have made the grids out of some old blinds I had. We bought the new edition of Mel's book and bought our seeds. Hubby and I filled the boxes with Mel's mix last year and covered it with black plastic over the fall and winter to keep the weeds and cats out of them so now the beds are ready to go.
I have to say that doing this has caught on with my parents. They are starting a SFG this year in some waist high raised planters that my Dad built several years ago. They are both in their 70's and are looking forward to our new family project.
I really am looking forward to hanging out here, sharing our experiences and learning from each of you.
