Hopefully he was just walking through on his way elsewhere and didn't catch a whiff of the goodies in your garden.  I am giving you a whispered "congratulations" so it doesn't hear and come back to see what he missed, lol!

From Camprns article:  "Woodchucks or groundhogs can remove 700 pounds of soil to complete a 20 to 25-foot-long burrow with multiple chambers which pose a serious threat to agricultural and residential developments by damaging farm machinery and undermining building foundations."

Can you believe such a thing!  It also said they have great hearing so it is a good thing I whispered Martha's congratulations to her, lol!

Yes, Tricia, thank you for sensitivity. Whispers only, until I make it safely to the first frost!

as someone pointed out to me last year when I aired the same complaint about those $&(#^&$*( groundhogs, Joy of Cooking has a good recipe and groundhogs are reputed to taste good. I second the idea of a tall fence around the garden. Mine is only 3' and the *(&#(*$&*(er got in to eat the tops of the butternut squash plants. There are babies growing so I'm hoping he'll/she'll/it'll leave some for me. Last year, it ate ALL my pumpkins.

We just found a hole/tunnel along the front foundation of our yard among the weigela bushes! One of our neighbors kindly lent us a groundhog trap and told us to bait with apples/peanut butter.
I can't believe the dirt, rocks, etc. this critter has moved and how large it is!! affraid
