Crazy weather - Fresno, CA

Post  sanderson on 8/19/2013, 10:22 pm

This morning, before our showers, my husband helped me turn the hot compost pile. Then showered and spent the afternoon inside with the air conditioner, napping and reading.  It had reached 109* even with few gray clouds in the sky.  Too hot to work outside, even though my new tall 2 x 4' is begging to be filled.

Suddenly, we had a thundershower and it rained for about 30 minutes.  I would say the temp is in the cool 80's right now, what with the wind (slight goosebumps).  Blessed relief!  It rained enough to actually clean the environment (nasty sticky pollution) instead of just splatting all the windshields.: clap Just had to share my happiness.

Update. Lightening from the thunderstorm hit a power station south of Fresno and 120,000 lost electrical power. The air that was cleaner right after the rain storm was smoky this evening so there must have been another closer fire.

Sanderson,  very dramatic.  I never experienced wildfires on Long Island or Ohio.  We do all share the ups and downs of our local weather, it's much different here, lately it is rather lovely.  But today begins a more typical stretch of humid mid 80's +...  It'll make the tomatoes ripen faster then the sluggish pace so far.

Sorry to hear about the possible fires, but I always love a good rain/thunder boomer! I wish we could get some rain Sad

Rooster,  I'm like a little girl, I have always loved the single August rain we get.  Usually from some clash of weather systems, then the Greek gods start fighting in the sky.  Sometimes it's a one minute splatter stirring up the dust and making a mess of windshields.  But this time it really rained!  A cleansing rain.

The downside is for the raisin growers.  Being the raisin center of the world, it's important that it doesn't rain too much when the grapes are drying on the papers down the isles.

Sanderson so glad you got that wonderful cleansing rain.  Hopefully you can get another to get that fire put out!  I love Summer thunder/rain storms that clean the air!  We could use it here!  I hope you get some soon Rooster!

LM sounds good for your tomatoes, but I think I would melt with your humidity.  You are probably very used to it though.

Thank goodness for rain! Especially when you have to deal with lots of pollution.

I was so relieved when we had the tiniest bit of rain clearing some of the forest fire ash out of the sky a little while ago. We're not smoky right here anymore, but it was weeks of smoke with little breeze and no rain to clear it.

It's been 30+ years and hate is a strong enough word to describe my thoughts re: Ohio summer humidity.  I keep a hanky to mop up myself in the mornings. I'd leave in a heartbeat if my husbands business wasn't in this area.  Still waiting for the publishers clearing house prize patrol van to come up the driveway Razz ... 5K a week for life, oh yes, that would take care of retirement and moving.

When I was in 7th grade we visited relatives in Ohio (we were from California). I was so miserable that entire trip. One morning we woke up to rain showers and I remember I was so excited how cool it made the temperatures. My family snickered and laughed and said, "Just wait." Oh my goodness 1/2 hour later I thought I would die. I could hardly breathe the humidity was so horrific.

I live about an hour from Sanderson in the foothills. We spend most of our summer over 100 degrees - but I'll take it over Ohio any day as our humidity is low!!!
