Joining you from Montreal

Post  babymango on 8/22/2013, 9:18 am

Hi everyone!
I'm a newish gardner who is making the jump to SFG!  I'm really excited about next growing season!  I've read Mel's book and I've been visiting this forum for a while, now it's about time I introduce myself...

I've had a tiny city garden for three years, neither row nor SF, just a few plants grown haphazardly in what used to be a flower bed.  With a full time job and now three kids under three, the time I can dedicate to the garden is pretty limited, which is why I have barely done anything with my garden so far.  But that is also why I'm making the jump to SFG.  I'm hoping that this way, with less weeding, less digging and less fiddling around with soil pH and such, I will be able to provide a decent amount of fresh veggies to my little ones.  Maybe I can even get them to eat some spinach at some point!

I want to start small, with 2 boxes (likely a 4X4 and a 2X8), growing the veggies the kids already like (cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and squash, snap peas) and a few fruits (strawberries, ground cherries and melons).  I'm still working out some kinks, like what to put between the boxes (likely herniaria glabra) and trying to convince hubby that composting isn't that tricky.

I found my material, even the large bags of coarse vermiculite and I'm just waiting for this season to be over to start putting everything together.  If I'm lucky I will even have time to plant garlic in the fall

Babymango I forgot to welcome you the other day so welcome  to the forum!  You sound like quite a busy lady!  You are smart to start off small with your busy life!
