Strawberry plant turning brown - help

Post  Kate888 on 9/13/2013, 2:32 pm

I planted strawberries this spring and they had been doing great.  It was a new bed and all I've done is water.  Suddenly last week they started turning brown.  Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

It's the end of the season. Do you remember what variety you planted? There will be required autumn maintenance and different varieties have different treatment.

Okay, it was just so sudden and we were still having very warm weather.  I didn't expect that until fall temps.  Maybe its more about daylight hours?  I don't remember the variety right now.  Just that it was june-bearing.

Kate
Earlier this week mine were looking very odd, as if the wind blew the strawberry leaves upside down and parted the plants in places.  For the second time in 2 months I went through all the plants and cut off every dead spot right down to the crown, cut off every runner and watered.  All the excess and dead material was removed, didn't know how matted things had become.  After all that cutting it looked wide open between the plants.  It seemed to let the remaining stems and leaves breathe(?) better.  I watered and everything perked up in about 4 hours.  Here I started out thinking some fast moving virus was going to kill the entire box of strawberries.  Maybe this will work for you too -- I hope so!!
