Open bottom compost pile - holes in ground

Post  sanderson on 9/16/2013, 2:38 am

I have an open bottom compost cage.  I'm cleaning up the dirt bottom and I notice several holes in the dirt, about a good 1/4". In the photos, you can see wood shavings and other compost left overs. The office clips are 1" wide, the type for about 30-50 pages.

I have 2 critters in the compost that have been screened out.  1.  Black soldier fly larva / pupa  2. Green fruit beetle grubs (C-shaped larva)  They are present in this area of CA.  I saw one outside the screen-in/tulle covered compost cage.  It reminded me of a iridescent green, lumbering C130, loaded with fire water, having engine trouble.  Don't know how it get off the ground.

Does anyone know if the holes in the soil are from either of these? I will treat the soil if it's #2.  #2 beetle eats mainly decaying fruit but will also eat good fruits and veggies.  As I don't have chickens, both #1 and #2 will meet their Maker.

But if the holes are large garden worm highways into the compost I won't treat the soil.  No worms noted in compost.
