Impending storms

Post  plantoid on 10/26/2013, 5:08 pm

Almost November and it's batten down the hatches big time , forecast to be of the magnitude  of 60 to 80 mph winds with gusts exceeding that and some .

If the current track of the storm holds it will be South Wales in a line  from Cardigan to Boston Lincolnshire and everything below it in the UK that gets a sound thrashing .
South Wales where we are looks to be the worst hit.

All starting Sunday evening into Monday .

Emergency lights checked and strategically placed , same with warm weather proof clothing , foot wear, food & a fully fuelled and tested petrol cooker. Car filled with fuel today .

Tomorrow will be the final visit to  last chance saloon for most of the UK to sort out gardens and stow any loose items .. a wheel barrow on a 60 mph blow can be deadly , it also makes an amusing adjustments to glasshouses and cars.

Back in 1987  when we had similar gales the trees still had a lot of green leaves & the ground was well soaked from several weeks of heavy rain  just like now .

The leaves on the trees acted like giant sails , the trees  got torn out the ground wholesale .
A heck of a lot of the Southern UK to the Midlands of the UK were devastated with massive trees taken out like bits of fluff and thrown several yards away .
Where we used to live in East Anglia we thought that a ghost had re-laid taken up track and sent a very very long express train howling by for hours at a time .

The next day we saw the havoc caused  around our small farm .. not quite as bad as it could have been for all the sprouts were staked up to sturdy 2x1 " posts .
The poly tunnel had had a big net draped over it and we'd suspended around 80 house bricks low down on the netting using strong wire hooks .

The only real casualty for us was Leonardo our goose , he had been blown around the large pen when his 150 kg shelter was flipped over like a lettuce leaf . He was mortally injured and too messed up for eating so I despatched & buried him with full military honours plus  a quarter  bottle of potent homemade wine  as a toast to him .

Do take sensible precautions tomorrow and don't put your selves a risk when the storm arrives
Anyone in flood zones take flood precautions as there's also going to be lashing of rain as well

Oooooo....I don't like that.  That's how our winter went last year here in New England.

What day and time is it for you right now, David?  We're at 5:30ish, Saturday eve.

Stay safe,

And we here in Central Oregon are supposed to have a 40-60% chance of snow around Monday. Supposedly not much, though.... Although around here, one never knows!

I'm beginning to think that our weather may somehow correlate with that of Western Europe. Generally, our weather on the West Coast is opposite of that on the East Coast (USA).

Will be thinking of you, Plantoid.
I remember the last storm, Sevenoaks in Kent lost six of it's seven oaks but did not change it's name.
Kew Gardens also lost many trees and later discovered that the tree roots were too shallow due to the fact that many trees had seating around the trunks that prevented the roots anchoring properly in the ground. So they started mulching out to the treeline and the seats were placed beyond the treeline. So I am hoping that will benefit the trees.
My sister lives in Kingston-upon-Hull so I think she will not suffer too much as she will be above the stormline.

Re: Impending storms

Post  plantoid on 10/27/2013, 8:19 pm

The lull before the storm apparently , it's bucketing it down with very fine rain brought in from the Bristol channel but at the minute the wind is not noticeably strong   .

Latest news flashes say the M4 motorway that runs from here all the way east into London is closed till tomorrow after the storm has passed

Just had another news flash as I type hurricane winds of over 74 MPH have hit north of Cornwall so it  should be here about 70 minutes time ..

Lashing of heavy rain with it .

20 odd red alert flood warnings and 60 plus ambers .  Most local authorities have as many emergency response  staff on duty as possible overnight  , fire police hospital  and military  by emergency responders also on standby .

It looks like it will take about 8 hours to move right across the UK and out into the north sea.
Our bungalow is a few miles inside the worst of the weather band .

Torches , warm clothing,  dog lead & food etc. all prepared .

Thank goodness we live on the lee side to the storms path on a big hill half way up 117 mtrs above sea level well above any flooding or rivers etc..

My main concern is that :affraid:we could find out in the morning that our 1.5 ton five berth  caravan has been picked up and thrown  down the hill  into a house etc.

I'm filling a flask with hot chicken soup  in a few minutes just in case  and then am off to bed as it is 00.10 hrs. Monday morning 28 Oct 2013

Last news flash ' 00.11 hrs.  61 mph storm conditions off the sea about 98 miles away at Plymouth Hoe  ,gathering strength as it come in off the Atlantic and comes up the Bristol channel , North Devon looks like it's going to be really hard hit , so are we as  we have lots of sea between us with no chance it of calming.

Re: Impending storms

Post  plantoid on 10/28/2013, 4:54 pm

It's all over bar the shouting ..we are safe ..others are not quite so lucky .

The forecast put us right in the middle of the storm’s path

I stayed up till 01.25 ish   and kept the TV on, 12.10 it was still giving out that we were to be struck with 80 mph force winds and by about 2 inches of rain . Suddenly the wind dropped and I realized we were either in the eye of a circular storm or it has passed up by without striking.

By 01.25 it became apparent that the storm had veered south some ½ hr. ago somewhere south of Lands’ Eend Cornwall and that it was going to miss our home by about 20 miles.

I went to bed and slept the best I’ve done in months, it could be the sudden drop in air pressure taking the pressure out of my spinal nerves that did it.   I woke up at 10 .30 this morning feeling great & well rested. I lost the internet  several times for a few hours today so didn't manage to post till now.

Had a walk round the garden , not even the 4 foot tall dahlia’s or any of the remaining flowering gladiola’s had been damaged , there were a  few more acorns than usual on the netting that we have over the pond.. “We wus lucky guv , blinking lucky “ .

The rest of the southern parts of the UK didn’t quite get off so lightly, especially around 05.00 hrs. to 09.00 hrs. before people wised up and stayed at home.

Ave wind speeds of 99 MPH were recorded off the Isle of Wight.  The southern coast line horrific weather conditions.

All trains cancelled till this afternoon so that line clearing and checking of trees can take place.

Many flights grounded, schools closed and hundreds of homes damaged because of, losing their roof’s or by trees falling on them.   Constant news warning since yesterday  telling people to stay away from wood lands in case tree keep coming down , from  the sea or running rivers.   Some idiots still went rubber necking, some even went swimming in the high foaming surf on a steep shingle beach ……. Idiots! …..  The under tow could take them in a second, brave people would then put their lives at risk trying to save them.

Over 400, 000 homes without power at one time, I think it’s now down to about 150 ,000. Thousands of trees blown down on roads, into rivers and on railway lines. Several people killed, many vehicles blown off roads.

The wee blow we had in 1987 saw over 15 million trees ripped out the ground & 19 people killed. It’s not as bad this time but I reckon it will be into several million lost trees and four or five deaths eventually attributed to the storm.

Camp ,
Thanks for the BBC link it shows far more than we have seen especially when you go on to other links within the main link .
