New Mexico Newbie

Hi! Just call me "Ducky." Last year my son brought me a 2' x 2' x 12" box full of Mel's Mix with a plywood bottom drilled for drainage. He also brought some seeds which we planted together. That's all it took! I'm hooked. Although it was too late in the summer for me to get much of a harvest in 2009, it got me started preparing for 2010. I'm starting this year with a new garden area fenced in with cedar pickets (hopefully to dampen the horrible winds that regularly attack us here). The enclosure includes a small patio area with table, chairs and a gas barbecue as well as 10 SFG boxes of various sizes. The enclosure is floored with weed cloth covered with crusher fines. Since I am 81 years old and don't enjoy working on my hands and knees anymore, the boxes are all set up on several tiers of cement blocks with nice wide aisles between. It's very convenient! I've got a lot to learn, since I've never done gardening before.

Welcome from down here in Hobbs. Glad to have another New Mexican here. What part of the state are you in? I can't wait to see a picture or two from someone else growing plants in our rugged conditions.

Thanks for the welcome messages Camprn and SirTravers. We are located about six miles South of Belen, NM. We have 10 acres of desert land two miles East of the Rio Grande valley. I hope to post some pics of my SFG garden after the crops get a little better start.
