My mother has a 10-inch Samsung Galaxy 2, and it's really nice. The size is good for reading or watching a movie without feeling too cramped, and makes playing games on it easier to do too. Response is good overall, internet speed is fine, and the sound is surprisingly good. Some complain of the movie camera being limited, but really I think that is misguided -- it's a simple but effective camera, and plenty good enough for a unit that isn't a dedicated camera.

Android is quite a learning curve up from using windows. I wouldn't say the system is particularly obtuse, but my mother could not move over from windows easily.

The tablet would really benefit from one of those bluetooth keyboards, as no matter how good the electronic keyboard, a decent-size keyboard takes up the size of a whole tablet or more, leaving little place to see your text or the context that surrounds it -- that is, what you may be looking at and responding to while typing. At this point, it's better for checking forums and e-mails than making posts or responding to e-mails. The convenience of a normal keyboard can't be beat. But if you want portable, even with a bluetooth keyboard by its side, a 10-inch tablet beats the heck out of a 15-inch laptop.

Also, the battery power is very good, like eight hours, unless you want to play games, which can cut that in half.

Rooster - great idea for vertical growing. Most of use can build it, more or less!

Camp - neat video.

I understand that it was a once in a lifetime event to experience, but wish the guys had a little more restraint on handling the babies. Maybe this wasn't a protected area? Or is that only for the egg laying time? What do I know. . .

Funny videos Boffer and Martha!  I can't believe how many animals were jumping!  That is amazing that someone could actually ride a buffalo!

Rooster, that would be great for someone with limited mobility but I would love one myself!

Camprn thank you for sharing that!  That is amazing he caught that swarm of turtles as it was happening!  I sure love the sound of the ocean!

Re: Senseless Banter...

Heads up on those considering buying tablets -- Amazon is coming out with a line of new Kindle Fire tablets, both regular and HD, and in both 7" and 8.9". Supposedly any day now.

A lot has been leaked. CPU performance was measured at triple, and the same CPU will be used in both tablets. Screen resolution went way up, to 1920 by 1200 or so on the smaller HD to 2560 x ? on the bigger one, and the non-HD will have much higher resolution too. (figures approx, from memory) Storage on the HD at least will be offered at not just 16 and 32 but now 64 gigs. Still no SD slot. 8.9 HD gets a rear-facing camera, but others still have only front-facing. Weight has been reduced. Back is metal now, not plastic. Shape changed a bit, but I don't know how much that may affect whether old cases fit on it. Buttons moved, some to side and some to the back, which is what would really make old cases not work. OS is going to be the latest version of Android, but not the upcoming 5.0. It will still be the heavily-modified version Amazon puts together.

I was just gifted a 7" Kindle Fire, non-HD, but considering the massive spec upgrade on almost every front, I'm going to turn it back in and wait for the new one, and pay the extra, if any. Supposedly Amazon is trying to keep the price points the same as they have been so far.

Personal review - the 7" non-HD makes me use the reading glasses I finally had to buy when watching movies, or move the tablet back and forth to correct for my vision. A 10 inch Samsung Galaxy does not. Same for surfing the web, but I can make the text bigger when necessary. However, that may mean I have to scroll horizontally a bit, which is not ideal. Overall, the picture is beautiful, and the sound is fine, especially with headphones, as all these small devices really need if you want great sound. Button and input placements aren't ideal, but I won't get into that because the new models are coming out and supposedly improve that quite a bit. There is no HDMI-out, which seems to me a significant compromise on any tablet or laptop these days.

The reason I am still going to stay with the 7" is that the size keeps it very portable. I lost my regular small, non-fire kindle, and took it everywhere. It could fit in the back pocket of many of my pants and ensured I was never too bored waiting in some line or for something somewhere to start up. The 7" can do the same thing book-wise, but also let me surf the net where wi-fi is available, watch a movie, or listen to music. That's a lot of options in a single device. Carrying a large tablet around is more of a commitment. You have to make allowances -- where and how to carry it, where to put it. The kind that make you question whether to bring it along and that make it obvious that you sometimes should not. The 7" is more like a large wallet, and I can and will take it everywhere without having to wonder how to adapt to having this extra "thing" around getting in my way.

It's a compromise. It's not as legible or as beautiful a visual experience as a larger tablet. But the extra portability means I'll get much more use out of it.

I think advice given to me might also be of use
One of my associates is salesman in a big world wide super store set up ,  he is head salesman in the largest outlet in this area  , it has sold hundreds and hundreds of the various  Kindles & other tablets .

Last weekend ,when I enquired about the new fire tablets his advice was for me to  wait six or so months after release and lets see what the failure rates turn out to be .

Evidently the early Kindle Fire's had big battery probs , some also got very very hot as well , it  ended up being outsold in their stores  by the Kindle Light.

There might be similar probs with the new range despite all the hype about it. .
