Shocked It was in 2010.  That was a tough year to be a gardener.

Actually, it describes a typical winter around here.  Mad

I don't know which is worse: a rainy Spring that lasts for months, or a Spring so short (yours) that if you leave town for a weekend getaway, you miss it! Very Happy

senseless banter

Post  kauairosina on 7/12/2015, 3:40 pm

A great part of the fun on this site is hearing how others are living all over and how it differs from where we live.  I went hiking up a trail today in the rainy mist, using my Leki walking poles.  I take forever.  About four times as long as my younger friends (in their 60's)..But it is really good for me.  I have a tree up there that I hug that I named for my husband who died 17 years ago so there's incentive to go up there in the slick leaves and all.

I had to google Leki.  Wow, that's a pretty fancy walking stick!  Wink

When I used to do a lot of backpacking, I used a bamboo cross-country skill pole which was cheap, light, and the longer length had advantages over a downhill ski pole.  I got a lot of teasing for it, but I swore by it.

Most of my walking these days is on rural roads.  I carry a collapsible baton in my pocket for the occasional free-running country mutt who doesn't think I should be walking past their house on the road.

The Leki stick has been a life saver for me. I'm approaching 80 (you can wish me happy birthday next month), and had started teetering and taking small cautious steps like I was afraid I would fall.  A friend started me out using bamboo poles, of which we have plenty, and I now use these sticks.  Chugging up and down the hills, lengthening my stride.  I recommend them to any of you getting older, older, older as a possibility instead of a walker or wheelchair.

Re: Senseless Banter...

Post  Marc Iverson on 7/12/2015, 6:19 pm

K - my father used to walk the long way down to our development's mailboxes, all downhill, starting from the steep drop from our house, the last one furthest back in our development. It got harder and harder for him, and eventually he cut back more and more. He wanted to give it up, but my mother and I encouraged him to keep at it even though it was hard. I told him that the day he gave up doing it would be the day he could never do it again even if he wanted to; that there was no going back once you stop taking care of yourself when you're older.

So he kept up his walks for years past the time he really wanted to, getting plenty of kind words from my mother and I for his toughness and resolve. He would sometimes meet his elderly neighbors on his walks, great friends about his same age, and they would chat and walk together. When he gave up walking, his physical condition quickly began to decline. He began to withdraw more from the world. He tired more easily, his balance grew sketchier and he began to fall every day. His sleeping problems increased. He gained weight. Within a couple of years, he died.

Good for you that you're going on tough hikes. (Although hiking in slippery areas, I'm not so keen on for people of any age.) As long as you keep doing difficult things, you'll keep ahead of the game and be healthier in all ways and probably happier too. I hope you stick with it as long as you possibly can, on good days and on the occasional crummy day too. You'll have a better life for it.

Cappy,
We smoked a bunch or ribs & bacon wrapped chickin breast for the Fourth. It was mighty hot but well worth it. Hope your BBQ turned out well. At least it is a good excuse to have a few cold ones.
 kauairosina
Please don't take this wrong but I hope I can walk up hill when I am 80!!! In S Fla everything it is pretty much flat land stuff so any incline is a challenge. YOU GO GIRL!!!
I agree with you on how cool it to share our gardening experiences. Cappy is hundreds of miles north of me but in the same zone. I have two Frangipani trees & two Coconut trees in my backyard. Not Hawaii but still have a Tropical feel. Of course it is still very flat down here.
