senseless banter

Post  kauairosina on 7/12/2015, 10:10 pm

Far from taking you wrong, I'm flattered. I keep trying to retreat to being a "li'l ole lady" but my friends will have nothing to do with it.  "You Must move" they say.  And, of course, they are right.  I know that my mother went steadily down hill when she stopped walking with her friends because she was so slow.  I have to keep telling my mind to "shut the f up" when it bemoans how incredibly slow I go up that trail. It's not like I'm holding anyone back.  I do take my cell phone with me in case.... Interesting, on the walk back down the paved road I go at a faster clip than if I don't do that trail.

So, take from me and keep on keeping on!

Now that is a inspiration to us all! Truth be told, I get winded taking the stairs let alone a mountain.

Rosina (hiking) and Kelejan (snow shoeing) are both inspirations.

Marc, Your father's story is also an inspiration.

I like that, Rosina.  My husband died 17 years ago and we had a trail that we walked that lead us up to the top of Dove Hill that had a lovely view of the city below, almost from one end of it to the other as the city is built alongside the Columbia River. Took us about an hour and a half going up.  Perhaps that is where our ashes can be spread so that we will always have that view?

For sure it will never be built on so the view will always be there, except maybe for earthquakes. Very Happy

Congratulations to you, Rosita.  Keep going.
When my husband closed his Aikido Dojo, he started slowing down and ageing.  Thank goodness we go to a gym three times a week to work out for an hour.  At least that gets him out of the house and prevents some boredom (which means TV and naps).  I'm at a loss as to how to get a once very active man interested in something to do.  He has an excuse for not doing anything anyone suggests.  By the way he is 84.

The fact that this thread is labelled as "Senseless Banter" does not do it justice.  It is full of banter of course, but it is also full of plain common sense. Very Happy

senseless banter

You have a point there. However, we all do know that it means something not directly related to gardening so it works.  Hard to come up with a catchy catch-all category.  I'm happy for the conversations.  A lot of good vibes from good people/

Somebody Has A Lot Of Negative Karma Today

Post  Razed Bed on 7/16/2015, 10:03 am

This is a 3/4 acre tomato garden.  The owner is a 95-year old man in Nashville.  Tuesday night, he had about 75 pounds of many different types of tomatoes ripe enough to pick Wednesday morning.  Sometime overnight Tuesday, some real piece of human garbage stole all the tomatoes and destroyed many of his plants.

The 95-year old man gives most of his tomatoes away to other elderly on fixed incomes, and now there are very few tomatoes left.

People suck. Then again, that the occasional 95 year old man spends his time and money and effort growing delicious, healthy food to give away for free proves that they don't. It's just a shame it can take so unusual a person to prove it, and we can't just take it for granted.

The battle continues day by day, person by person, impulse by impulse. We'll never be done with it.

I once met a fellow like that in the San Fernando Valley in So. Calif.  He was also about 95 years old and had a tomato farm in his front yard.  I decided to knock on his door and introduce myself as a CI.

We spent quite a while talking about his tomato growing techniques, and he gave me some samples to taste. Were they ever delicious!

I feel so bad for that man in Nashville.  These days folks can be so selfish.  Perhaps there might be a way for detectives to find him.  Perhaps he could be sentenced to (among other things), growing his own farm of tomatoes to teach him how much careful work is involved.

I had to chime in Donna.  I grew up in the San Fernando Valley.  I wish I had bumped into that man!  I bet you had a wonderful time chatting!

We did, indeed!

I'd been on the way to visit a client who lived around the corner from this "tomato farm."  I'd previously been tempted to stop but had resisted the temptation.

Well, this time I decided to bit the bullet, and I'm so glad I did!

Wonderful generous people, and then it only takes one selfish destructive person to undo hours of good work.  Just sad.

Marie, yes, my back yard when I first started in 2013.  How strange to see they used one of my photos.  I wonder where they got it??  I'm away from home right now.

How very sad.  Would bet that the thief did not do anything with them either. Just an evil person would do this.

Picking 75 pounds of tomatoes would take quite a bit of effort, greatgranny, so I doubt he would not do something with it.  I think this must have been done with intent; boxes required, vehicle required, etc.

Probably sold it off to a restaurant for some quick cash.

Because we here are good people and assume that everyone is like us.  We have to realise that we are not.

Note: The word realise is underlined in red to say that it is mis-spelled. I should say that I speak  and write British English.  That is the trouble with being bi-lingual. Very Happy

Tomato was one word that I used to be joshed about the way I said it.  I still have to think when I say that word. Same when I visit England, I have to think how I am speaking. Very Happy

Well, it would have slipped by me, as that's how I tried to spell it earlier today! Thank you spell-check.

There's no doubt that British English seems like a foreign language sometimes. Especially when plantoid is the one talking! Wink

Oh, I realize it, Kelejan.  I hear it from the stories from the cops/military/etc. who come in for classes with us.

But I just don't get why someone would do that to an old man.

Greed, I know.  But good grief!  (sigh...................)

What would make my day is for some people who live in that area to come out in droves and replant and also if they have tomatoes of their own to donate some to this old mans cause.  That would be the icing on the cake for my heart.

I'm supposed to have some Welsh in me, but it's so far back that it's irrelevant.

I get a kick out of plantoid's vocabulary and slang. I must say that he's more adept at comprehending the U.S.'s arcane units of measurement, than I am of translating some of his Queen's English.
