Almost free compost

Post  johnp on 1/10/2014, 5:06 pm

Today I went to prison. Well for a short time. The state prison complex is about 15 miles away and our state does not give them operating money so they have to produce their own supplies. They have large farming operations, fish farms, greenhouses and a large dairy. After several days of calling wrong numbers I finally reached the dairy. They have miles of composted cow manure. After a back ground check and surrendering my cell phone at the gate I went to the dairy where they loaded my full size truck bed all the way to the top and more on top. I put a tarp over it so I wouldn't loose any on the way home. Cost $11.00. Smile  I don't know how much a full size truck bed holds in yards but it looks like a lot to me. They use a machine to compost it so I need to get it tested.  Any suggestions where to get it tested. Also, after we run out of our tomatoes we buy from our local stores prison tomatoes which are much better than regular store bought. I guess they are kind off like caged tomatoes.

 John ,
Quick ....become a jail bird ........... fly back there as soon as possible and ask for a barrel or so of fish trimmings , weed from the ponds ( if any ) or cleanings from the filters if it is  a fully filtered fish farm .. that stuff will help make a compost good enough to grow dollar bills on your baby brother  ..it's that good .

Plantoid I wish I could but they use all the products. They processes the fish for sale to Whole Foods. They also sell the fish to a company that processes them, puts spice and stuff on them an sells to grocery chains. They take the fish skins to another location an make cat and dog treats for dog treat companies. Besides my dogs would like my compost pile more than me. By the way I did remove some of the compost from the truck before the wind got the best of me. It looks really good and well composted mostly but then you run into a spot that doesn't look composted at all. This is probably because it is composted by machine and I am not sure how it works but it's big.
