compost-mania

Post  landarch on 1/25/2014, 4:25 pm

Made a trip to a local brewery this morning for some spent grains to compost...two big chunks (frozen) for the compost pile...several hundred pounds...big time moisture content...hope it's good for the pile and the raccoons and possums stay away...grains are all from Europe.

...also hit Starbucks hard for the last few days for coffee grounds...there are nearly 20 starbucks in my area...picked up 15-20 bags of grounds in the last two days from the 4-5 locations closest to my house.

Here is a video showing a guy who uses spent grains in his compost.

Boy, every time I've put bad grain into my compost pile it's super heated!  You're going to have an amazing batch with that

I use grape pomace and grape stems from the winery up the road, good stuff!

Local micro-brewery! What a great idea. I will try it this year. I'm guessing it's a Green??

I'm assuming it's a green...the video link posted above describes adding additional browns moderate the grains.

I was able to roll grains across the yard (frozen in the shape of a 55 gal tote...it was cold last night) then broke apart with a large steel bar.  Hopefully the heat of the compost pile will melt down the large frozen chunks...there should be lots of yummy rich liquid that soaks into the pile as well...supposed to be near 60 degrees tomorrow.

The neighborhood now smells like fresh bread and coffee.

Going to a brewery for composting goodies never would have occurred to me. I love how creative composters can get!

Great idea!  A small brewery just opened near me; never thought of that.

This morning after church I told my wife we had to get coffee grounds from church and the two Starbucks nearby before heading home (we have two Starbucks about 1/4 mile from church).

At a stop light she told me I'm a bit obsessed with composting...but it was hard for me to pay attention because I was eyeing a banana peel someone had thrown out onto the roadway...started to wonder if I could jump out of the car and grab it before the light turned green.  I need help...sigh.

LOL! Our daughter, son-in-law, a young man and his wife from church (he's like a son to us) all sat me down and said, "you know, we were looking at all your garden space on the walk into the house and we just might have to do an intervention...., LOL!"
