FINALLY! I'm harvesting zukes and cukes! (pics)

Post  dstack on 2/20/2014, 9:23 pm

It's been a rough road getting here, but yesterday I harvested a zuke, today it was a cuke and tomorrow I'll have another zuke from my garden.  I've got little cukes on the way, and hopefully more zukes soon.

Marketmore. I'm not sure if I should have waited a few more days to pick it, but it was delicious! So was the zuke (Dunja) last night.  Very Happy

YUM!!

my excuse for picking them young is the more you pick the more the plants will produce....its my free pass for eating right out of the garden, and not waiting to get it to the house....the kids have learned the same thing LOL as they have their own growing space now because of fighting among ourselves  rofl it was starting to push some of us to eat strawberries and tomatoes when they were not quite ripe yet in fear of another person getting to it the next day if we waited!

Awesome!

Post  Windmere on 2/23/2014, 10:53 am

Wow!  Congratulations!  That is awesome.  I didn't get any cukes or zukes last season because I wasn't home for an extended period of time and they did not get watered regularly enough.  I'm very hopeful for this year though.

I was out shopping for bananas today and stopped to look at the seed rack. Thanks to you  dstack, I came across some Marketmore cukes and knew exactly what to do. I bought them. I have been just about cukeless and zukeless for the past two years due to PM. Now I'm on the lookout for dunja!
I also picked up some burpless beauties last month. They should be PM resistant too, I hope.

Marketmore Cukes Seeds

Post  Windmere on 2/23/2014, 6:40 pm

Dstack,

I also am intrigued by the variety of cucumber you are have success with.  I am purchasing some certified organic heirloom seeds from Amazon.  I found what I think is a very good deal:  $2.98 and free shipping.

In case anyone is interested, here is the link from the Amazon page.

Now, I'm not endorsing them... I'm just showing y'all what I found in my travels on the internet.  I could not find a better price than the above.  Oh dear, I just said  y'all.   lol!

I'm petty sure I ordered mine from High Mowing, and that's a good seed company but I highly recommend  first checking with www.RareSeeds.com which is Baker Creek. I love that they are so dedicated to fighting against GMOs and Monsanto.

Thanks dstack.  I actually (somewhere around) have a catalog from RareSeeds and I too appreciate their passion when it come to GMO's and Monsanto.

I only recently found out about Sweet Corn Organic Nursery.  In this case, I have an Amazon gift card, so I think they might be the best route this time around.  One thing I just found out is that they too have a safe seed pledge when it comes to GMO's.

http://www.sweetcornorganicnursery.com/store/pages/Safe-Seed-Pledge-%252d-No-GMO-Seed.html

I'm going to see how these cukes do to help me decide if I want to continue buying from them.  Right now Sweet Corn does not charge any shipping and in some states no sales tax is collected.

I have a doctor who is extremely anti Monsanto.  She gave me a book to read about them.  I think they are evil incarnate.
