Where do I put the bin ???

Post  gategitter on 3/3/2014, 2:10 pm

Ok as a very new organic gardener I am going to do the whole compost idea.. Now, I have oodles of questions and I know that the answers are probably in the many many posts that are here, and i plan to read them ALL !! But.........  I wanna know some base rules if you may.... Where do I put it... Does it smell while its "cooking"?, How often do i turn it?, do I water it?, And last but not least....... Generally, how long does it take to "make" compost.. I know it will probably take a long time and am prepared to buy this year but would like to start now for next year.  Thanks in advance and when you stop laughing at me, please help me !!! lol

You have posted some very good questions and although I know a little about composting I'm very interested in the responses. I wonder if we have a topic area just about composting.  My question is how do we chop up those strings of wandering jew that we throw in a pile.  Yards and yards of it.

The typical advice is to play it safe by not adding  feces from meat-eating animals as they might contain some pathogens that won't break down if the compost pile is not allowed to heat up properly.

Most all farm animal manure can be used, although some recommend not using pig to be on the safe side.

There might be a better distinction but this is how I see it. Feces and manure are different although they are both waste material. Feces comes from meat eating animals and should not be used in composting. Manure comes from plant eating animals. Feces can contain bad things that you don't want to contaminate your food or garden. Manure on the other hand is harmless for the most part. I grew up on a farm and we would throw it at each other after if had dried. From throwing to falling off my dirt bike it has gotten in my mouth on occasion and no harmful side effects. I think it has to do with the insides of the animal that produces the waste and those animals who eat meat have things inside them that make their feces harmful.

Chicken manure is okay to use in your compost.

if it's straw that is better then hay which typically has seeds in it. Chicken manure and any bedding is an ideal addition to the compost heap.

Cats, dogs and other carnivores eat meat and they don't always cook it before eating! There are numerous intestinal parasites that can be passed to us.

Barnyard poultry eat plant type stuff and insects. Barnyard mammals generally eat plant stuff. When composted, the intestinal bacteria in their fecal material should be killed. Especially with the hot composting methods.

This forum has a lot of composting info especially the links that camprn posted. I also like the Rodale's Book Of Composting as a quick desk reference.
