Building boxes with already stained wood

Post  xianshouston on 3/4/2014, 12:00 am

We are not new to square foot gardening however its been 6 years since we have lived in a place where we could have a garden.  During the moves we got rid of our boxes.  When we moved into our current house, the previous owners left 32  46 1/2" long, 12" wide, 3/4" plywood planks.  They are stained on one side - I think they were from built in bookshelves that were removed.  Would it be okay to use these to make the boxes?  They are free Smile

Thanks

Susan, Welcome to the Forum!  glad you\'re here

Do you have a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening (1st or 2nd Ed.) by Mel Batholomew? There have been some changes from the original SFG book. Most notable is that there is NO dirt involved anymore. Just pure composts, peat moss and vermiculite.

As far as the plywood, it may work. New plywood does not have formaldehyde like the older plywoods. But most of it may have flashed by now. Put the stained side out and the plain side in. Plywood will eventually de-laminate from the moisture but you may get a couple or more years out of them if they are 3/4" thick.
