started seeds!!

Post  southern gardener on 3/7/2014, 1:20 pm

Started about 150 corn, Peaches and Cream and Silver Queen. LOTS of cool gourds, Lima Beans, cucumbers, cantaloupe, 3 varieties of watermelon, green beans, spaghetti squash, 3 varieties of zucchini. Planted about 280 in all! Hoping they all come up and give us lots of goodies! Started going to a local Gardening Club last week. There is a really cool lady there with a HUGE tote of seeds she was giving away! Got some really neat seeds!! Still looking for Trombocini (sp??) seeds !!

Wow, that's nice. You must have a lot of space. Are you growing any of those loofa gourds? Those are pretty cool.

We have about 300 sf of garden space in the back and about 70ish in the front?? Yes, growing two kinds of loofahs!! They soo cool. We took a couple of the gourds camping last year, and I let the kids open them like "the indians" and took baths in the stream!  LOL. It was pretty funny, but they learned how to make things instead of going to the store. The also got to see the seeds inside which is also pretty cool. I can't wait to get my maters and peppers in too!! The Lima's are "Christmas Lima" so really interested to see what they do and look like Smile

You must make a lot of compost to work 300+ sq feet!!  I love starting seeds.  I wish I had as much space as you but I can't complain with my 84 that I do have.  My main limitation is compost!  I have a few more beds that I will put together maybe later this year when my newer piles of compost mature more.

keeper, we do make a lot of compost, but since using the Back to Eden Method, it sort of makes it's own compost. We do have 4 large working compost piles going most of the time. We have a neighbor with alpacas and are in touch with 4H kids with rabbit manure, and we also raise some of our own livestock for other manures. We use the wood chips and garden scraps, household scraps, cardboard, paper, coffee grounds etc for our compost. 84 is a lot of space!! That's awesome! Our garden has grown to include space for flowers too Smile

Rose, that would be awesome to be neighbors! Sounds like your little guy and my grandson would have lots of fun together!!'
We got 3 varieties of watermelon, gourds, cucumbers, kale, and more from the seed lady. She had tons of seeds, but I felt sort of greedy taking what I did. She was so nice and wanted everyone to take some Smile
The next meeting is at our house, so that'll be fun. I love that my daughter is getting more into gardening. She has 3 little ones, so time is precious for her Smile
God bless all!!

hehe! We're very blessed to have the space we do. About 100 sf is in flowers right now. I wish I could figure out how to get a video here from my phone. They're so pretty right now !! It's all pretty much planted or I have plans, so we are having to seed in 6 packs to hold the plants until the current garden is "done". Smile

okok........I'll have to delve into the youtube world!!  For now, here are a couple of pics of the beautiful flowers, and some whopper turnips! We cooked them for dinner, prepared like mashed potatoes and YUMMOOOO!~ My little sweeties LOVE being in the garden and picking stuff! They got swiss chard, kale, collard greens turnips and some flowers Smile I'd like to add too, we didn't wash off the turnips, they come out clean as a bean with the woodchips! It's amazing Smile
