Carrot Week 2014

Post  southern gardener on 4/3/2014, 10:52 pm

Hey guys...are we gonna do carrot week this year?  This is the info Rooster gave us last year...shall we do it again?  Mods, please delete if you don't want to do this!!

Surprise! Surprise! Guess what time it is again already??
Are you in the planning stages for your 2014 garden? Have a couple of empty squares you don't really know what to do with yet, or perhaps you anticipated a little sumthin, sumthin and left a couple open on purpose?
Well, your assumptions were correct! It's time for our 4th annual Carrot Week.

Shall we do the same as last year with colors? Colorful carrots. Scarlet, purple, yellow. You name it, any color goes this year. So get out those catalogs or head to the garden centers and get those colorful seeds before they're all snatched up.
Or, maybe a couple, biggest also??

Whatdoyathink??

As in years past, this is just forum fun and a time to bond and share your carrots with others. It's a great way to get your kids involved in the garden and a fun way to get them to eat their veggies.
Be sure to check in often with updates and pictures of your carrots and their progress. We all love to see the funny shapes, sizes and this year, the colors! Giant carrots, funky carrots, ugly carrots, twisted, fat or bumpy, lumpy carrots! Let's see them all. So secure those seeds, and get those boxes ready!

Carrot Week Begins On April 15th!!!
As years past, let's do three days before the 15th, and three days after. So, the 15th is on a Tuesday. You can plant your carrots anywhere from Saturday, April 12, thru Friday, April 18.

And don't forget to pay your taxes by April 15th!

That's so funny, SG! I was thinking about this during the night and wondering if I should start it. Let's do it! I usually don't have much success but its fun anyway. I think this date is too early for me to plant carrots ...or something.

Maybe I'll do like rooster did and have an in and out box this year....hmm...

Thanks, CC.  Last weekend I filled 5 sq with them.  Will do the same next week.  And 2 weeks after that...  We LIKE carrots!

Don't know if DH will go for the scarlet ones.  Yet.  I'm going to try some and see how we like them.

I planted carrots (purple) last week in the greenhouse. I'll plant more in a week both outside and inside and see what happens.

I am IN.    I still have one 4x4 bed that I have not harvested all of the carrots from last year. BUT I MUST, soon.
Carrots are a GREAT crop.  With the mels mix, I plant them in April and then again in other beds after I harvest (LIKE THE GARLIC) and then completely ignore them until fall when I start harvesting  ESPECIALLY after it gets really cold
I figure that there are SO MANY other things to eat in the summer, carrots I SAVE

My beds are still covered in snow.  I'll just plant as soon as I can but I know it'll be late this year.

I guess we could do a few different things. We could push it back a week, add a week and make it two weeks, or call it carrot month....

I planted 4 squares last week on 3/30/14 - Red Cored Chantenay, YaYa, and Nelson.  If I wait until carrot week, the carrots sprout real fast but don't do much else until next Sept.  I will see if I can plant any more during carrot week.

As I was responding to this, I see CapeCoddess mentioned this but I agree, we need a CARROT MONTH to accommodate various climates.

My 12"-deep carrot/potato/leek bed lost nearly half its volume of Mel's Mix.  Should I just level with 5-way compost?  Any other suggestions?

I'd really like to get my carrots planted by the end of the month.

I'm guessing you mean that your MM settled, not that it blew away?

My 12" carrot box settles every year.  To prep it for the next season, I add the appropriate amount of compost to each square, remove the grid, then reach to the bottom to mix in the compost and fluff up the MM, then replace the grid.

I'm in my seventh year of growing carrots in the same box, and they're my most dependable crop.  I added new MM in year 4 or 5 to top it off.  I think that keeping the MM fluffy, and fine screening the compost I add (¼ inch) is what allows me to grow long straight carrots with few deformed ones.

Boffer,

I think part of the problem is due to settling and the other part traceable to the fact that I had to move both 12"-deep beds last summer when I was having a new lawn installed.

We decided to use a shovel to move each square foot of MM/plants to their new location, then move the boxes.(after putting down new weed cloth).

Cor carrot week already .. I've only just cleared the carrots from the last one.

I'll give it a go this year but cannot promise anything great , as I'm trying to juggle things about due to the landscaper/builder telling me yesterday morning that he hopes to be here and working some time towards the end of May on the final set of high raised brick beds.

I'll have to plead bad weather and ask for permission from , " The Committee  Laughing ", to sow them in 10 days time as it's too wet & cold at present for them to have a reasonable chance of germinating.

In reality I  took all herbs and things like Goji berries , asparagus , rhubarb &  herbs out the mother earth beds, giving them temporary home in my carrot & cabbage  beds.
Thinking ( wrongly ) that the builder would have been here and finished by the beginning of March this year .
