QUIZ FOR MY VERY BRIGHT FRIENDS

Post  rabbithutch on 4/5/2014, 9:01 am

There are only 9 questions.  They are straight questions - no tricks - and all have straight answers. (Nbrs. 3, 4 and 8 should be easy for this group.)

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?
4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters ' dw' and they are all common words. Name two of them.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

1)    Gymnastics
2)   I think that this would be true of any great glacier
3)  asparagus and artichokes
4)  strawbs
5)  I would guess that the bottle is blown at the time that the brandy and the pear are put in.... would be interested in others thoughts
6)  I would have to cheat on this one
7)  I can only name a few Period, comma, colon, semicolon, question mark exclamation  mark,
Cool  ?  This one really has me thinking.
9)  Sandals, slippers, socks, shoes, snowshoes, skies

Not gymnastics, tho that is possibly a very good answer.
Glaciers don't move backwards, they calve when moving forward, I think.
3 is spot on but there is at least one more.
4 is correct
5 close but no cigar
7 very good
8?
9 Do you really wear "skies"?  Cool   (skis, maybe.  But I live in a flat hot place where they are unknown.

I will provide the answers after a while.

You know that is the thing about spell check....IT DOES not correct you when you spell a different word
I just could NOT figure out how to spell SKIS and I should know.
It is EARLY here in BC Very Happy

Up here in Canada, the glaciers are receding and many that used to be snow all year long are moving backwards each year.
"an old indian legend about the glacier in the sky
Sitting on the highest mountain, like an ancient butterfly
and should the moon awake to find her wings no longer white
The way the story goes... we'll never make it out in time"

That was the first 'dw' word to come to my mind, too, LLM.

Dwell, dwarf, and dwindle soon followed, though; and the 'standard' stipulation takes out dweeb, I guess.

Number 1 is very tricky.  Some of the offered answered seemed very plausibly accurate at first but the stipulations were that neither participants nor observers would know who was winning or even ahead.  Of course, sometimes boxing fails that test, too.  In horse racing, both observers and participants can tell who is ahead even though the end might remain in doubt until the photo is examined.  I think that scores for individual gymnasts might fit the stipulations because even the judges don't know what other judges are going to score a routine; but for an entire competition, accrued points and reputations of those who have not yet performed gives both participants and observers knowledge of who is ahead, even if the outcome is not yet decided.
