Hello fellow Mel Mixers

Post  PaGn on 4/5/2014, 8:31 pm

Year 1 -Actually coming up on a month, started 3/13/14, as a new SFGs. The LW and I are new converts. She has more experience growing plants and some veggies so I'm the brawn in the tag team. She discovered SFG a little over a month ago and we have taken off with it. Her experience with the Texas soil and my growing frustration in digging holes/rows have made the switch such a blessing. We have both the original SFG book and the ANSFG. Read them cover to cover. Have been lurking in this forum and finally decided to register and share our story... We have 4 of the 4'x4' beds and have planted both veggies and plants. I promise to post pictures as soon as I can get them downloaded from my Android phone. I can tell you that we've had our first salad from the bounty last week (red & green lettuce, spinach, parsley, mint) and first thing this morning I made a green smoothie with all veggies from our squares (curly kale, spinach, mint) and had enough to bake kale chips. We're very happy so far. This forum has provided a great deal of support to our initiation. Thanks ya'll.

Overview of the garden. We have 4 of 4'x4' beds. As you look at the picture you face due South. The DW is the "designer" and this is still in progress. I'll try to post close ups of the beds with description of contents.

Pictures of the beds:

My Mel Mix holds up well 24 hours after watering. Of course, good ol' Texas heat hasn't really shown up yet:

Oh this is just so beautiful, PaGn!  I love all the space, so much room to breath.  What are the 2 flying saucer thingys in the back of the first photo?

Howdy, PaGn!

You and the missus did a bang up job on those beds.  They are both productive of food and appealing to the eye.  Well done!

I'm down the road a piece in Bell County.  I'm a noob this year myself - to SFGing, anyway.  Because I'm in my 8th decade, I made mine as table tops.  I have one of 4 planted with herbs and a couple tomatoes and bell peppers.  Still working on the others.  One I still have to assemble and put hardware cloth and landscape fabric in.  The other 2 are waiting for me to do another MM party.

Welcome to SFG-TOF!  Good to see you, neighbor!

Very pretty, and I love how easy and uncramped the area is. It looks very pleasant indeed to sit in those chairs and look out on your garden.

You're growing a lot of flowers and greens. Are you going to be growing any of the traditional fruiting-type vegetables, like tomatoes or peppers or eggplants or cucumbers or squash?

CapeCoddess, the "flying saucers" are actually fire pit inserts turned upside down so they wouldn't collect dirt and water during the rains.

Marc, we have tomatoes and bell peppers as well. Haven't come up yet. Well I gave A-ONE green tomato. It's our first year so we're just trying out for what we like to eat. I can tell you we have more beds in the future.

rabbithutch, thank you for the welcome.
The backspread is about 2 acres so we have room to grow if need be.

those pics could be a book cover...colors and textures are great

we've had hot temps here in KS...my four broccoli plants bolted way too early...and cabbage/ cauliflower may not do much of anything....wait and see before dedicating those squares to something else.

PaGN, To be prepared for the Texas summers, time to start looking for some mulch to cover the soil. It's a life saver, keeps the moisture from evaporating too fast and the soil/roots cool.

Thank you all for the compliments.
The DW is the one with the eye for designing these. I provided the "muscle" and do the maintenance (watering, weeding-none to speak of really, bug maintenance.) and harvesting.
Sanderson, "has55" has shared quite a bit of advice with me about the mulching cover and other aspects. That man has a wealth of experience to boot. Will be looking into that soon.
The whole "forum" community is really a joy to be in touch with.
The pictures are taken with a Samsung S4 phone.
