I've Sprouted!!!

Post  catbranch on 4/22/2014, 10:33 pm

Thanks to all the advice from you lovely folks, I got my raised bed set up, filled with Mel's mix, presoaked some seeds and then planted them. My first time ever to plant anything.. this was on Saturday, April 19th.

I went out this morning and didn't see a thing of course, but I wasn't really expecting to. However, when I checked this afternoon after a light rain shower, I had 9 radish sprouts and a couple of lettuce sprouts! I actually screamed in excitement.  Very Happy

I called and sent texts to everyone I knew and shouted to my gardening neighbor across the street. I am just tickled pink.. I was out there taking pictures like they were my kids. I'm just so very thrilled!

You aren't kidding boffer! I'm already hooked and only have a total of 11 sprouts in my garden so far.

On a side note, my husband just took the flashlight away from me when he saw I was trying to sneak out to check on things for the millionth time this evening.

That made me laugh out loud! Unfortunately, he will know that's a lie since I lined up my kids to be the handlers of all things creepy before I ever bought my supplies.

No worries though, tomorrow I'm springing a new project on him for this weekend, building me a compost bin. Tomorrow night he will be handing me the flashlight just to avoid talking to me about compost and the bin that shall hold it.

catbranch, we know exactly how you feel.  I went out in the garden myself this afternoon after some heavy prolonged rain and found my radishes were showing above the chips.
I already have garlic, shallots and strawberries showing but they were from overwintering, the radishes were the first seeded plants this year. I was so happy.
Now to look for the beans, lettuce, snow peas and flower seeds I have planted.

Ahh, now I see why I feel some comfortable here! You all have a touch of crazy just like me! Here I thought I was alone in my obsession, but little did I know it was a widespread epidemic!

This morning I found my radishes looking so cute with the sunshine glistening on their morning dew and to my delight a few squares over... yep that was several more baby lettuce sprouts I spied! Of course their tiny selves would have gone unnoticed had I not had my nose a millimeter away from every square inch of my square foot garden, hehehe.

My next door neighbor asked if he needed to bring me a magnifying glass. Oh my gosh you have no idea how badly I wanted to say yes, yes, YES.. and make it snappy darn it!

I'm so in love.. with my garden that is.. not my neighbor.  Wink

Well, I answered on this one, but it disappeared....?

Got SUCH a good laugh out of these posts!

 rofl

Cathy - CONGRATULATIONS!  I didn't scream, but I did go get Mike and call all the neighbors!

If I was to go out there at night, Mike would shake his head, roll his eyes, and ask, "Why me, Lord?  Why me??!!"

Then he'd lock me out just to be a smartaleck!

Re: I've Sprouted!!!

Post  lyndeeloo on 4/23/2014, 10:27 am

Hi Catbranch. Welcome to the joys SFG. You'll absolutely love it. This is my second year with the SFG method, although I've been gardening for many, many years. I am amazed at the results I've seen in my garden in comparison with traditional gardening techniques.

I completely understand the obsession! I'm the same way. Right now I haven't gotten anything in the garden yet because I am reworking the beds. The plants are still downstairs under the lights. All the seeds have sprouted and I check them constantly for growth. They are just the cutest little things, I can't help myself.

So for now, my obsession is a still a secret from the neighbors, they can't see my late night trips to the basement. Embarassed  But once the plants go outside....... Oh well, the neighbors think I'm crazy anyways. Thankfully my sweetheart has learned to deal with my insanity, or at least tolerate it. There are the occasional eye rolls, head shakes and mutterings, but we've mostly worked it out. As proof of my insanity, I just finished mixing up a big tarp full of Mel's Mix in the rain.

I increased the depth of my garden beds this year and made one really deep for root veggies. One more batch of MM should do it but it's really raining hard now so I had to stop. I wanted to fill up the beds today so I could start planting. Maybe this afternoon will clear up and I can get back to it. Fingers crossed.

Re: I've Sprouted!!!

Oh dear, oh dear.  If this is what makes you scream when the radishes start popping, what will you do when you start your own seeds under lights?  Those little green heads pop up and you want to dance around the room.

My starts are doing well under lights and I recently sowed things outdoors like lettuces, spinach, greens, and radishes so each morning when I water the seed beds, I look closely for sprouts.  I'm waiting to see which ones pop first.  Makes the ole heart fill with pride at the popping.

And thanks for mentioning a magnifying glass because I have one in my desk and next time it comes out with me.
Enjoy.

I don't know what good staring at them is going to do, but I'm so tempted to go look at the tiny flecks of green breaking the soil in my little pots. It's not like they need me to sing them a song or something. Still ...

Hi AtlantaMarie,

Parris Cos, Romaine, Orange Wellington, Roma and Beefmaster tomatoes, turnip, beets, swiss chard, spinach, yellow bell peppers, brussell sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. I've also got Black Krim and Brandywine tomatoes, carrots, green bell peppers, celery, basil, oregano, sage, parsley, potatoes, sweet corn, mini watermelons and marigolds waiting to sprout under another set of lights. I need to start some squash, cucumbers, eggplant and popcorn soon.
I think I got carried away....Maybe?    thinking  Did I forget anything? rofl

I think they like the attention Marc. I talk to my sprouts and sing a little of "Here comes the sun" when I turn on the lights in the morning. But insanity runs in my family.  Laughing
