What animal makes these holes in my yard?

Post  cpl100 on 5/14/2014, 9:40 pm

One hole in my front yard (near my alliums if that matters):

Two holes with a smaller one attempted, but not completed, between them in a different section of my yard (by a huge tree if that matters):

Can anyone identify these (positively or even possibly)?  Thank you.

Could be anything: chipmunk, squirrel, even skunk.  The skunk that roams my yard appears to be curious to know what I've been up to and will often leave little test-pits near where I've been gardening.  Did you see any tracks?

+1 chipmunks get my vote.

I'd say snake if they were further apart...  So, yeah, probably chipmunk.

The snakes have not been terrible active up here in New England yet. It's still quite chilly aside from 2 recent days of warmth.

I don't think snakes dig holes, they will use them, however.

Thanks for the replies.  I strongly doubt it's a snake because in the 30 years I've lived in this house I have only seen one snake (much to the disappointment of my sons when they were young).  However, two years ago I did have a huge problem with chipmunks.  Well, they were cute until they decided to eat my tomatoes.  Until then I had a live and let live policy with them.  That ended when there climbed in my tomato pots and bit the ripening fruit.

After reading about chipmunk habits, it seems they should be nurturing their new offspring 'down there' now.  Is there anything I can do during this phase to eliminate them?

Today, my remaining tomcat (Sterling) was standing guard over a particular area of my back yard.  This was not his usual behavior, so I took a closer look.

There was a 2"-diameter hole at that spot.

An archaic memory told me to flood that area, so I stuck my hose in the hole and turned on the water.  Sterling remained there for a while, watching.  No critter emerged, so I assumed that it/they either retreated or drowned.

In Iowa, we call them 'squinnies'...I think most of the rest of the world knows them as striped chipmunks or perhaps ground squirrels. A rat trap will take care of them...hate to do it, but it's either them or me...I feel like the guy in "Caddyshack" somedays.... Sad

I've got Caddyshack going on in my backyard too....

After years of trying absolutely everything, I have build a fortress this year... (I'd upload pics if I could)....  but now my two 4x4 beds are surrounded by 5 foot high chicken wire, and wrapped in bird netting....  there is even chicken wire under the beds so they can't dig in....  I am only hoping that the bees will be able to get through...

but boy was I tired of waking up in the morning to see half my plants chewed off....

Could that be whats eating leaves on my pak-choy ?
Leaves are being chewed just down the the stem, a shredded leaf stem is left.
