Post  Pappy Slip on 5/19/2014, 5:04 pm

This is my dear Brother's TP I built a few weeks ago. I don't think he has ever had a garden. The only thing he has ever grew has been hair....LOL

Very, very nice!    Did you mean TT, instead of TP?

Yes it is. A local sawmill has tons of it to cut. I purchase it for .80 cents per board foot.

Hey Pappy - and anyone else that has built an elevated SFG - what material do you use for the bottom of the box?
Hubby and I would like to do some of these closer to the house - but aren't sure what to use for the bottom that can handle the moisture.

Thanks!

Salsa, I use 6" wide cedar boards. They are sawmill rough cut and are very thick and strong. Now the trick is to fit them loosely, leave space between them so water will drain. I make sure to level the box to allow for drainage to be even across the box. Drainage is important here because as I have learned lately flooding the box is a certainty if not draining well.
Now with all that being said, I'm by no means the TT expert. Plenty of smart people on this forum.

Plywood with drain holes or supported hardware cloth (wire mesh) lined with weedblock are the choices for tabletop bottoms.  Do a search on tabletops and you will find many folks on the forum who have built them.  Another option is cement mixing tubs with drain hole drilled in the bottom and supported by wooden frames or cement blocks.  These can be "no building involved" if you are construction challenged like I am.
