Pictures and Advice Needed on Sunshine and Watering

Post  shegardens on 5/26/2014, 5:45 pm

Finally I figured out how to post a picture!  (sorry it's sideways) Here's my SFG with its chicken wire and bird netting so that no one can get in but me (I've got lots of hungry groundhogs and squirrels)- and even that is not so simple.

But here's my dilemma:  My next door neighbor and friend wants to have a bit more privacy (which is fine with me) but she wants to plant 5-6 foot tall bushes for this purpose along the fence and I count on that morning sun for part of my 6 hours of sunlight a day - so if she plants there, behind my garden, I'll lose out on a few hours of precious sunlight (the afternoon sun I get lasts until about 4:00 due to trees on the other side of my yard)

So any advice how much sunlight I absolutely need?
and also:  I'd love some watering advice since I can't put in a drip system this year....

Is there any chance of a compromise?  Half solid, half redwood lattice fence:

You could promise to plant vining peas and beans there.  Very Happy

Great idea!  Thanks Sanderson.

I will suggest it!
She is also thinking of some 2x2 raised beds to put shrubs in, and I suggested maybe putting those on wheels so that we could roll them away in the morning so I can have my sunlight and then back in the afternoon for privacy...

it would be a lot of rolling, but I'm willing to do just about anything for my garden!

seems like whatever is going to give us privacy will also give us shade....

I understand about the sunlight. My backyard is challenged.

Thanks Sanderson!

Do you have an opinion on whether it's better to use a soaker hose vs. a drip irrigation for my two beds?  I've been reading earlier threads/posts and I'm not sure which way to go...
I've got mostly tomatoes, corn, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, melon....

I wasn't going to install one this year, but I'm rethinking it now....

I only use drip lines, so I don't have any personal information on soaker hoses. I take it you have already used the Search box for soaker hoses. I do know that driplines work, especially when the "drips" are every 6".

yes, I've been reading the soaker hose threads, and I already own one...
but somehow I'm getting the sense that the drip irrigation with tubing is just a better way
to go...
I'll give it some thought and as always, thanks for your guidance!!!!
