VIDEO GARDEN TOUR - Memorial Day 2014

Post  dstack on 5/27/2014, 3:44 pm

I'm pretty happy with how most of everything is coming along.  I'm learning more every day!  Very Happy

My swiss chard is super bitter. Does that mean it's too hot this time of year to grow it?

The hottest I've seen my compost get is 143 degrees.  Very Happy  I love it!

And I should have mentioned that the second papaya plant in the ground, which is the smallest of the four, is the replacement for the one that was assaulted by the neighbor's acid wash. (A neighbor drained their muriatic acid from cleaning their pool.) The one that is in the pot, that I cut, is the one that I rescued and she will most likely stay in a large pot.

Very nice, Dstack!

That's a LOT of stevia in that one square.  I've found it gets quite large.  I'm only doing 1/sq.  I ended up drying a gallon from one plant last year.

The chocolate mint looks great as do the papayas.  And Kiki is beautiful...!

I really like your layout.

Yes, Kiki is adorable! She my main garden cat.

This is my first time growing stevia and so I didn't know what to expect. I''ve also been cutting it back a lot and using it in my daily green smoothies. There's an even sweeter variety of stevia that Baker Creek has, and I plan to order it in my next seed order. Did you plant yours from seed? I bought the plant and made cuttings. I've heard that the seeds are a challenge to germinate.

Loved the tour! I can't wait until my garden shows that much green. My main garden cat is an indoor cat, so he helps out with seedlings and seed packet selection!

Loved your tour! Everything looks lush and happy. It's so interesting to see the difference between zones too. I live in the Chicago area (zone 5b) and watching your video was like going to another planet.  Smile  Kiki is a doll!

Your garden tour

Post  sfgbeginner on 5/28/2014, 10:41 am

Very impressed with your garden tour.  Never thought of putting a screen over the garden.  I like that idea a lot.  How effective is the screen for cutting down on the heat?  Anyhow, I will post a few updated pictures of my setup, but you really inspire me to try new plants and maybe new setups for my square foot gardens.  Keep up the nice work !!!    okay

Thanks! The screen has helped a lot. I still saw leaves wilting just slightly even with moist soil, so yesterday I added another screen on top of the other.

I'm also a sfg beginner as of last September. Good luck with yours!  Very Happy

Nice spread you have there and WOW on the papaya plant. Want one but I'm in Georgia.
Try "lucullus" Swiss chard some time. Mine is huge and no bitter taste whatsoever.
A lighter green leaf with a white stalk.
Never heard of chocolate mint; have to check that out.
Your Kiki could talk to my Moxie. He just rambles on and on and on...
(Maybe they could call each other on their kitty cell phones. 555-talk2me)

OH!  REALLY good.  It really tastes like chocolate & mint.

Dstack's got a really nice bed of it.  I'm not sure mine made it thru the winter in the window box on the deck.  But HD has some if push comes to shove.

Like all mints, it's quite invasive...
