And hurrah for releasing Gulf Frits!

My visitors are in a tree in the backyard. I figured out what was making the strange (to me) noises the past month or so -- coons. No photos, barely got a glimpse between the branches of the willow tree. That means the only garden pest I haven't spotted in the immediate vicinity of my yard are skunks, rats, mice, and bears. I've seen deer, ground hogs, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, a vole, and opossum. I don't think my garden would last long without a fence.

If you look to the lower right of the feeder, you can see my humming bird.

No pictures but a couple unusual animal occurrences.  I was sitting under the old oak tree taking a break and pondering the state of my garden and saw two different unusual animal activities.

A chipmunk came out from under my cowpea garden bed.  It reached up and plucked a cowpea pod from one of the plants and began to shuck the pod and ate the peas from inside.

A cardinal landed on a small landscape fence that was surrounding my buckwheat.  I was letting the buckwheat set seeds so I could harvest the seeds to replant again.  That darn cardinal was actually harvesting the seeds right off the top of the buckwheat.

I let my gardens go wild with grasses and it is amazing the birds that rely on those grass seeds.  Goldfinches, cardinals, sparrow and wrens....wow!

A few weeks ago there was a small frog looking out from behind the mailbox on our front wall. Every time I tried to take a photograph it moved away. I have not seen it for quite some time. When we got home tonight in the dark it was back and I managed to take photos. The frog was sitting on top of the porch handrail underneath the letterbox. This is quite a small frog and nicely coloured.

My next door neighbour found something interesting when he was trimming his side of the cedar hedge that divides our backyards. This was low to the ground. Wasp nest? Hornet nest?

I released 2 late Gulf Fritillaries into the zinnia bed this morning. It was hard to find a flower to put them on, since the bees had claimed them all. Note to self: plant more zinnias next year. We still have one more frit chrysalis to go. It's already turning dark, and tomorrow should be a beautiful day, so, fingers crossed, it emerges tomorrow.

Yay!  My cottage red marigolds were the bomb for the pollinators this year.  They kind of pooped out, but the self seeded everywhere, so I had volunteers that are helping foll the late fall gap!  Nature!

Oh dear!

http://www.colonialpest.com/what-makes-those-big-paper-nests-in-trees/

My friend when we were 9, hit one of those while we were riding our bikes through a neighbors yard, and those things came out, knew it was him, and attacked him.  He fell off his bike, ran home, got 15 or so stings and ended up in the ER!  Terrifying!

I agree with Scorpio Rising -- Bald-faced hornet nest. At peak ripeness you would have been able to tell -- that one looks overgrown and dried out. Laughing Based on the one I'd pass by frequently in a local park (without issue), I'd give them at least 6x6 ft sq of space (3ft on every side) given their tendency to emit wasps when ripe. Maybe more for growing a big one like that. Not an efficient use of ANSFG space - growing them in a cedar hedge like your neighbor did works better. Or high in a tree. There's a nest somewhere in my neighborhood that is made partially from my deck (I frequently saw wasps gnawing on the railings to collect wood pulp this summer.)

These weren't in our yard, but the pic came out so good I had to share. They were in the back yard of an estate sale, under a huge old apple tree. Daughter-in-law went out to shake the tree to bring down more apples for them. Several landed on her head -- I should have taken a pic of that.  Laughing

Staggered out to check the deck plants early yesterday morning before I was really awake. Had my face down close to some babies. Moved over a little and came face to face with this. EEEEEEK!  affraid He just sat there calmly, while I recovered my composure and went for the camera. Rolling Eyes
