*Adorable*!!! For me, I think it would be more like me giggling as I picked him off the deck, clutched him to my heart, and danced off to find the camera. I miss the big ones. My current yard only seems to have the little meadow katydids.

Re: Any Strange and Wonderful Visitors? Photos please!

Post  countrynaturals on 11/18/2016, 11:23 am

While bringing in the potted passion vine plants, I found a very unwelcome resident. A Gulf Fritillary caterpillar. It's way too late for this. I have plenty of leaves for him, and a safe place to live, but by the time he emerges as a butterfly, it will be too cold for him to survive outside and his food sources will be gone for the winter. I scrounged the yard and found one small zinnia, just starting to bud, so I will bring that in. I also have some milkweed still blooming, and possibly some yarrow and lantana. I hadn't planned on having all that in my tiny space, but what can you do when the children decide to move back home? Rolling Eyes In a perfect world, we'll have a couple of weeks of unseasonably warm, sunny weather in about 3 weeks. Otherwise, I guess my greenhouse will have a house guest.

AARRGGHH!! Just found another one -- even smaller -- Note to self: Wait until after Thanksgiving to bring in the passion vine next year. (I thought these guys were all gone a month ago.)

Never know....you get what ya get.   My gut says they will be fine.  The tiny uses less. Everything is in order.  However we do need to get a hold on global stuff.  Third world do not care about ecology.

Never have.  Nothing new.

Here's what I found in the backyard this morning. We're only about 2 miles from the river, as the duck flies, but I've never seen them here, before. They only stayed a few minutes, then they were gone.  Cool (Sorry it's blurry -- I had to use max zoom.)

They look like Mallards. A couple of years ago we had a pair nesting right next to our neighbor's font yard foundation plantings. The only water nearby was our very small fish pond in our backyard. Very Happy

They sure have cute babies, but we have too many cats for them to stay around here to nest. Sad

Grown accustomed to the easy life

Post  Banned Member on 3/30/2017, 12:04 pm

It is illegal to hunt in our county, and too many people here believe they are pets, so these lazy urban dwellers have grown accustomed to receiving free handouts, coming up to doors, using your deck as a litter box, and even pushing your garage door open to get shelter in the rain.

We have them here, too, but ours are very well behaved. They rarely come into our yard anymore, probably because of our big dogs, but the neighbor up the street feeds them, so we see them around there once in a while.

This morning it was wild turkeys, just taking a stroll down the road in front of our house. I had been hearing them for a few days, but never saw them before. I got lucky with the first pic, taken from 50' away with the zoom. They were HUGE! Cool

Don't know much about birds of prey.  So, is this an osprey, hawk, eagle, falcon, or something else?  Unlike Ollie or Olivia the owl, this dude made no attempt to be friendly and almost made a threatening move before it flew up into our woods.

Looks like a red tail hawk to me.  They are awesome.  Very common around here.  I love raptors!

CN, you should see those babies fly!  It is truly amazing, no wonder Benjamin Franklin wanted these birds as our National bird....or emblem...

Thanks, Scorpio.  I looked up red-tail hawks after reading your post and after hearing an audio clip of its sound, I recognized it as one I keep hearing in our yard.

These two guys are loving the orange zinnias! I'm not sure if these photos are of the same one or if there's 1 of each - they're moving so quickly.

This shrub is right in front of my hose faucet, and as I reached over it to turn on the hose, I caught this little guy sunbathing. He was nice enough to stay put while I ran to get my camera. Very Happy Just a garter snake.

Lucky you, HG! Wish I had more snakes. Maybe that would take care of the chipmunk & rabbit population explosion.

I saw one scooting through the garden this morning that was so tiny a mouse could handle it. Shocked It was only about 6" long and fast. Not really sure what it was. Anybody ever see a snake that small?

Hmmm...maybe a skink? Could it have had tiny legs? If it was moving really fast, it might have been easy to miss the legs.
