Where do you buy your DE?

Post  cpl100 on 5/29/2014, 1:15 pm

I bought some last year for my hostas.  Apparently I used all of it because I don't see it in my garage.  At any rate, I went to both Home Depot and Lowes and could not find it there.  I know I bought it at Home Depot last year.

What I can't remember is whether it went by some other trade or generic name but I can't find any to buy and my hostas need it!

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried a pool supply company?

I bought some yesterday at Lowes. It's in a new bag, and only 85% DE. I am wondering what the "inert ingredient" is?

Sanderson, no.  Didn't realize they would carry it.  Would it be just by the name DE?
Pollinator, is there a brand name or what does it say on the packaging?  Bag?  Box?

Thanks!

If your problem is slugs, why not try Sluggo Plus?

Research using the pool grade DE in the garden.  I seem to remember passing up a great deal on pool grade at Bennys but can't remember why exactly.

I get mine at a local nursery, Hart Farm.

I had in my mind that I wanted to use something non-chemical and that DE was what I researched last year.  Cannot recall the details of my research, though.

Just looked at the Sluggo Plus and it looks like a chemical.  Did I read it correctly?

Yes!  I've used it for years.  But I use Food Grade that I get at a local nursery, Hart Farm.  I also use it on my cat for flea control.

If what your calling DE is diatomaceous earth, I did a search last fall and ordered 40 lbs.
Just started using it for sowbugs the other night.
I used the dispenser they recommended, however I went to a table spoon and like it better.
If it's important for some one to know where I got it let me know.

"Food Grade DE often gets confused with filter grade DE.  Filter grade DE starts out as food grade, but it is heated to about 1,000 degrees and chemicals are added to crystallize it.  This works great for filtering but is dangerous to people and animals. Breathing the crystallized product in over long periods of time causes a disease called silicoses.  The world health org. has said that DE needs to be less than 2% crystalline silica in order to be considered safe.  The filter grade DE is 60% crystalline!!"  Diatomaceous Earth

You can order it directly from them or you can also get it from Amazon, which is what I did. Since I'm in Texas I have to have the EPA label so at the time I ordered it it was cheaper for me through Amazon. Ok....don't know why that link is messed up and it won't let me fix it.

TxGramma, Thanks for the info you posted. Until now, I didn't know there was a "food" grade. I'm only familiar with filter DE for pools.

You're welcome! There's a lot of good info on their site, very interesting. I found that when I was researching health benefits of it, before I started gardening. I didn't stick with taking it long enough to say how much it does help but I'm going to start back on it this week. I need to get some health issues under control and it did seem to be helping before. Just one of those things where you wonder is it really working or am I just feeling better because I am doing something to get healthier which is making me feel better since it has taken away the mental stress of knowing that I need to do something.  thinking   But I have slacked off too long with my health so definitely time to make any positive changes that I can. And just like in my garden I'm going to do it as organically as I can.
