MM Party at My House This AM

Post  rabbithutch on 6/7/2014, 3:33 pm

I mixed 90 gallons of MM before 11:00 AM today, all by myself.

Yesterday I finally located and obtained four 55-gallon plastic barrels with tops and fastening rings.  They had contained aloe vera extract but had been washed out and were very clean.  The hoops for the top have a hefty 1/2" bolt to secure them.

I have a small bin for mixing concrete by the bag.  I used it to mix my composts.  It holds 15 gallons without spilling over.  I also have a 5-gallon plastic bucket.

My method (or madness) was to put in half a 5-gallon bucket of mixed compost, half a bucket of peat moss (which I watered down) and half a bucket of vermiculite.  I then used a short handled hoe to mix the ingredients, then repeated the half-bucket process again.  I then fastened the top and hoop and rolled the barrel across the yard, turned it end for end and rolled it back.  On opening for inspection, the ingredients were well mixed and raking through with the hoe failed to find any of one ingredient in excess.  I purposely stopped filling the barrels at ~45 gallons to leave room for the ingredients to continue to mix.  Each of the 2 barrels were rolled across the yard 3 times.

Having done the tarpaulin procedure on my last mix, I find the barrel rolling to be far easier, less total effort and yields a very even mix. I still need to do this 2 or maybe 3 more times as my beds seem to be multiplying.  Sad

I've been doing the same thing; just came in for lunch.  I use a number of 55 gal barrels too.  Some for compost; some for MM.  It'll take me a day or two, but I'll end up with enough sifted compost and MM to see me through next spring's planting.

I've been at this long enough to get ahead of the game so that my compost pile is always  ready a year ahead of when I need it.  No stress or extra putzing around trying to get compost ready in a hurry.

It is gratifying to know that I'm following in the footsteps of the master.  I'm getting my mix done so that I can do the Fall planting thing here in Texas.  I hope to have all 4 beds in operation for planting starting in mid to late August.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking about making a mixing frame to do the barrel rolling instead of pushing it across the lawn.  I think I can design it so that it can be used either for a compost barrel or for mixing MM.

LOL there's nothing masterful about me.

But I had to chuckle 'cause I'm using my homemade compost barrel to mix my MM too; it was more convenient to drag out than my cement mixer.

boffer, you are the master indeed. You're the kind of guy who owns a cement mixer, for goodness sake! I'm the kind of guy who owns a swizzle stick. Everybody seems to have such wonderful toys!
