I live in the Philippines  and have  a 400 sq. foot plot of raised bed  garden 7 rows and 2 square foot gardens and working on 25, 5 gallon containers to complete the garden.  I have had good luck on most Asian vegetable staying mostly organic.

I enjoy with  experimenting various  forms of Organic  Fertilizers and Pest control

I made to 55 gallon drum Compost tumblers they work great and only takes a few months to have rich compost

Thank you

How do you do it.  I spent 6 months in Palawan and couldn't get anything to grow. Two cherry tomato plant and some pitiful kale.  Got 2 cukes off a vine.

I am in Thailand

Post  rrbeckn on 6/10/2014, 3:26 am

I read your story on gardening in the Phillippinnes.  I believe that here in Northeast Thailand must be similiar growing conditions.  I have to admit that I have had terrible luck here trying to grow veggies.  I am going to try the sfg method and see how it goes, any advice will be welcome.

Vegitables in the Philippines

Post  Wefisher on 6/10/2014, 10:16 am

Mostly I work the Soil.  My Garden is about 1000 meters from the Sulu Sea.  Hence all sand.   I brought in bags and bags of dirt to mix with the sand in raised beds. Added Mulch and compost. I use a lot of home vegetable and fruit scraps in my compost   tumblers.  Due to the warm temperatures I find a can produce a nice rich compost in about 1.5 to 2 months.  I plan to buy a  leaf  /blower / Vacuum / mulcher.  This will speed up the process some. I also use cow manure I will also try pig and chicken manure sparingly.

I grow Okra, Bitter Mellon, Long Beans, White Radishes, Egg Plant, Sweet Potatoes, a leafy veggie Kankong, and Squash

I am looking for property to extend my operation.

The only thing I can tell why my garden works is the right amount of Moisture, Sun,  I  just joined but find this site is great everything you need to know is here.

Welcome to you both, Bill & RRBecken!

You'll find several people in hot, humid areas on here as well as coastal regions.  I'm sure they can give you some great advice.

composting

Post  rrbeckn on 6/12/2014, 8:48 am

I would be interested in how to make a composter using a 55 gal barrel.  The first year I was here I had great luck with tomatoes.  It was a variety called money maker and I had tomatoes for months.  Since then I can not get any thing to grow not even the money maker tomatoes.  I planted Thai peppers and got a great batch and the next year nothing. I made the bugs happy.  Just some more thoughts on gardening.

Sounds like you have the same problem I had in PI.  I think it is lack of nutrients. Vermiculite and peat are not available, although I used vermiculite as a packing material for some boxes I shipped.   I bought some compost and had very limited success.  None of the stems of plants thickened up enough to support the plant well and the plant could only support 1 fruit at a time.

I didn't have access to manure and I think that's what is needed.  Plenty of green for compost, but not enough brown and no manure.  My next trip I'm going to see if I can find manure.
