Using Surround - a clay product, as sun screen

Post  Judy McConnell on 6/19/2014, 12:41 pm

I see where a couple of you used this product as a "possible bug protector" but have any of you used "Surround" sprayed on tomato fruit to prevent sunscald?

Thats one of the uses of clay, I've been using clay on my cuke's and a few other plants.
I have always thrown a cover when I thought the sun was an issue..
It has to work as a sun shield, only problem is it needs to be renewed after a rain

Using Surround

Post  GloriaG on 6/19/2014, 11:42 pm

Yes - I use Surround.  But I use it to repel squash bugs and squash vine borers.  It's a fairly good repellant.  You just have to remember to hand pollinate the squash once it's sprayed.  It's not a poison so it doesn't kill anything, but it irritates the bugs skin so they avoid it.

Haven't used it specifically as a sun screen, but I can see where it would help. It leaves a fine white powdery residue that undoubtedly blocks some of the suns rays.
