Calcium supplement

Post  jrfrommd on 6/20/2014, 5:37 pm

A good friend of mine who farms on a large scale for a living recommended a shot of calcium when my plants start "setting fruit"...is this necessary with Mel's Mix?

Thoughts?

Don't think it can hurt, I always mix ground up eggs shells in the planting hole for at least my Tomatoes. I guess you could just sprinkle them on top at this time of year.

Try using the cooled water from boiled eggs to supply extra calcium.

Try digging in a bit of dry Calcium-fortified milk around your plants.  Eggshells are a long-term solution and don't affect plants quick enuf.

this is typically not necessary if you made your mix with at least five different types of compost. I suggest adding amendments only when you see a need to do so. Watch your plants for signs of nutrient deficiency, but I suspect you will likely not need them.
