Bug ID please

Post  dixie on 7/4/2014, 10:21 am

Does anyone know what kind of bug this is?  They only appear on blossoms & I haven't seen any signs of chewing,  so I am assuming they are some of the good guys.

I didn't realize I was photographing them in an "intimate moment".  I didn't have my glasses on.

This a long-horned beetle often found on flowers.  Specifically:
Banded Flower Longhorn Beetle
Typocerus velutinus

Family Cerambycidae
http://www.americaninsects.net/b/typocerus-velutinus.html

It's larvae burrow in certain hardwood trees but neither larvaq nor adult is harmful in the garden.

Thank you!  The garden is at the edge of our hardwoods.  I've noticed a few in past years, but this year they are very plentiful.  I'll have to think about hand picking to help keep them under control before they kill our huge trees.
