Help - something is eating my veggies!!!

Post  angelazeis on 7/10/2014, 9:26 am

Hello!

So I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and something is eating all my tomatoes/eggplants. I have found the skins of the tomatoes in one corner of my deck so they are just eating the juice. I also had some bird seed in a bag and found in the morning it had been clawed open. Could it be a squirrel or rat or mouse ? How can I prevent this ? So frustrating to see all my hard gardening ate up by something other than my family Sad

Hi Angela!

Sounds like it could be either of them.  Do you have a lot of squirrels in the area?  (But being on the 3rd floor, I'm guessing a mouse...  sorry...!)

Prevention - well, I'd start w/ a mousetrap with peanut butter or cheese maybe mixed w/ some of that bird seed.  You want to make it nice & yummy for them.  See what happens then.

Let us know!

Thank you for advice ! I will buy a trap today and see what I can find out Smile I think it's coming in the nighttime.

Angela, do you have any trees nearby?  It could also be a racoon or some larger creature using trees to make their way into your deck.  My mother has a second floor balcony that's often visited by ducks who fly in and make a mess of things.

Your visitor could be something larger than a mouse that doesn't "fit" into a mousetrap, in which case you could snap it's paw or nose in the trap and then you'd have a bigger problem.

If it's a calm night and the wind won't blow it away, I'd suggest spreading a light dusting of talcum powder or baking soda, something that would show you the creature's tracks around your plants.  You could even bring your plants (I'm assuming they're in pots) in for the night but leave some bait in the middle of the powder.  That way, you can tell what you're up against and be in a better position to deal with the problem.

If you had a trail camera, those work great, too, for doing some nighttime spying on your tomato thief.

HTH & good luck!

YUCK, YUCK! The baking soda - food trap worked and I didn't even need to study the tracks cause I saw the ugly thing last night come have his snack! It's either a BIG mouse or a rat. Time to call the maintenance and get this rodent out of my gardens!

Do you have opossums in your area?  They look like ugly rats but they are good climbers.  How did the creature get to your deck?  Were you able to see how it got in?
