Hello! New here

Post  Mrsbales on 8/6/2014, 8:11 pm

Hello all,

My name is Laura, we own 15 acres in east TN. I have been using the SFG system for 10 years.  Our rule of thumb is that anyone that comes and works on the farm gets a share in produce, our largest summer we sent food to 9 households!

I am starting the correspondence course for certification, and look forward to offering SFG classes to my son's homeschoool co-op

Hi Laura.  Welcome to the party!

I'm north of Atlanta, so not TOO terribly far from you...

Welcome!

Laura, welcome to this forum.  You will meet some of the nicest people I know here.  Everyone is very helpful.  I have avoided many missteps by heeding the advice of the many experienced gardeners who offer help on this site.

How wonderful that you have been able to produce enough for 9 households!  cheers

Some day, I also would like to become certified.  In the meantime, I learn much by participating in this forum.  Enjoy your time here, and above all, enjoy your gardening projects!

 glad you\'re here

Hello to ALL!! I'm so new I squeak!! Retired 2010 from the military, retired from law enforcement, and retired from Teaching. Now learning to fly. In college with two majors. Agriculture, and Aviation. If I'm not flying, I'm planting.
I live in Prescott Arizona, a mile high, and love it!! I enjoy Aquaponics, and "dirt" gardening. I'm a prepper  at heart and want to learn to can what I grow. Thanks to all!! ( Out Here ) Army for good by!! Very Happy

Major,  Welcome to the Forum!   glad you\'re here

I think this is one of the best gardening Forums.  We talk about all kinds of general gardening topics and Square Foot Gardening specifically.  I looked up some climate info for your area, nice annual rainfall around 20" with summer highs in the 80's but 6 winter months with nights down to freezing.  The mile-high elevation must be what keeps your summer temps mild but allows for snow and rain.  You can grow in the winter months with the right setup.  Use the Search box for all kinds of topics.

If you haven't already, please get hold of a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd edition, by Mel Batholomew.  It's easy reading and most Newbies find the concept of growing in 6" of rich mix exciting.  It doesn't matter what the soil conditions are like, or even if you only have a concrete slab, because you are creating your own growing environment.

Tell us a little about your gardening setup, hopes and dreams, and post a photo of your gardens so we have an idea of what you have to work with. We LOVE photos.
