My SFG using hula hoops for net support

Post  rosiejoe on 5/2/2010, 2:17 pm

Hula hoops for net support!
Hello from Ireland, Europe. I am new to SFG. So far I have built two 4x4 beds. I have used hula hoops to support my neeting which keeps the pigeons at bay! I used conduit brackets and sheet metal screws to keep the hula hoops in place. Here are my photos!

Yes that is one hula hoop per hoop ok. I have to admit it was my husbands idea so I cant take the credit but it is proving to be one hell of an idea to keep the pigeons at bay! I am glad to share.

I may have to get a couple of these for my youngest son's box. He has each side painted a different color and this would look great on it.

Adorable! (and a question)

Post  jenjehle on 5/2/2010, 10:44 pm

I love your Hula Hoops! What a fantastic idea! I love the splash of color. It is such a great idea to use them. My kids would love this... my husband, maybe not so much

We're all looking at your Hula Hoops but I was also noticing your veggies too! They look great! Everything in your beds looks as if it's growing wonderfully Smile What all are you growing??

I do have a question. In my beds I had to drape bird netting over them temporarily while my lettuces and strawberries are growing. But I have had a hard time deciding how to attach my netting. Do you have your netting draped over the hoops attached somehow or are they just draped and hanging freely? I'm concerned also about rabbits getting under my netting and climbing right into the bed to enjoy some greens.

Thanks for sharing your Hoops!

Love your hula hoop idea!

Post  LindainWarwickNY on 5/2/2010, 11:41 pm

I'm so glad you shared it with us! Husband and I are still in the planning stage. I know, we're a bit slow! Hee hee. I really love your hula hoop idea. I had seen a protective netting and metal that you could bend to make arches in one of the catalogs I get, but your hula hoops are already bent and arching. A much easier, cleaner idea! Love it! Must show husband!

I use these clamps to attach the netting to the pvc and then just put garden staples around the outside. http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/1725-Medium-Snap-Clamps-20-per-pak---for-use-with----Black-Poly-or-PVC-Pipe.htm

Hula hoops
Thanks for all the kind words! To secure the neeting on the hoops I used small little cable ties. I used 3 ties on each hoop. One tie on top and two on the sides. The netting then stays in place in the wind no problem. The netting is so stretchy that you can lift it up and still work away and tend to your garden from every side. The hoops just lift out of the conduit bracket so are very easily removed netting and all altogether if you so wish. It takes just a second to replace them again without a bother. The netting had to be cut to fit each box. It seem to be a perfect width but it was millions of meters long when I bought it. One can buy more sombre coloured hoops- I just liked the colourful ones! I have some very disappointed looking pigeons sitting on the ESB wires overhead. They must make alternative arrangements for their dinner!
I am growing spring cabbage to go with the bacon! red cabbage, leaf lettuce, white lisbon scallions, betroot, carrots, garlic, shalots and spinach!

I LOVE that .....love it!

There is another post floating around out there; someone asked what you would do differently with your SFG. Well, I would make mine a colorful garden. I would paint the boxes a funky color and use your hula hoop idea....how FUN is that?!?

I love it.

I love the color of your netting, too!

Post  LindainWarwickNY on 5/3/2010, 11:15 am

In the stores around here, it seems to be dark in color. Your green netting is so much more cheerful. It's interesting to hear it is stretchy. Does the place that has the clamps for holding the netting on the hoops also have that netting? Does anyone back here know where one can send away for that type of netting?

I really love the color you painted your boards., too! You get an A plus! Hee hee! That's an excellant grade back here!

Oh, speaking of grades, how do we grade the photos in the album section? I was looking at one the other day and saw that it has a section to grade them from 1 to 5 I think and wasn't sure which was the excellant grade and which was the opposite. I realized I better exit out of the grading until I knew or I might accidently hurt someone's feelings by not knowing what I was doing!

I thought of that on this side of the pond, but actually didn't want to cover the whole box. I think that's a great idea to foil your birds.
Great minds think alike

If you want something that covers less space use wire clothes hangers and secure shade cloth, row cover or plastic as needed, with clothespins.

Here I'm covering 2 squares of lettuce against the hot sun with cheesecloth since they were recently transplanted.

Walmart had hula hoops for $3 each last week. None in my local dollar stores.
